Who the Chairman’s son is and who Diviner is are all revealed in Episode 38. As the clues have hinted, the chairman’s son is none other than Lin Hao and Lin Yi Mu is Diviner. Out of the two, only one had the power to save Immortal, and that’s Lin Yi Mu. Sacrificing his own privacy, Lin Yi Mu has his true identity published in Immortal, helping the magazine reach that number one spot Headquarters had insisted for the magazine to survive. Now his face is known to the world, he can’t remain an editor at Immortal. So, it’s goodbye to Lin Yi Mu.
Pretty Li Hui Zhen Episode 38 Recap
Lin Hao:
“Hello, everyone, I’m Lin Hao. From today, I will take up the company CEO position.”
That’s right! Lin Hao is their new CEO. The sloppy, stingy old man who doesn’t look or act like he could be the chairman’s son is actually the chairman’s son. He’s looking important and quite the part now, though: gone are the t-shirts and shorts and his unkempt perm. Replacing that is a smart pinstripe suit and tie, and a cleaned-up perm. He’s also got a small contingent of his people (his subordinates) by his side.
Lin Hao’s looking pretty nervous standing in front of his surprised and confused former colleagues. His eyes aren’t able to meet anyone’s and he’s taking a few deep breaths whilst the Editor in Chief introduces him. When time to give his address, he seems to have found becoming their CEO a little strange and a bit funny: he had let out a chuckle when he finally looked at his former team members.
It seems to be the same for them, too. After their initial surprised and confused reactions, grins replaced them as they listened to Lin Hao take his position as their new, very important boss. Lulu and Zhu Ying had let our silent chuckles, which is what caused Lin Hao to chuckle himself.
(Note: Lin Hao’s new appointment is ‘zǒngjīnglǐ’ which can mean CEO or General Manager. We’ve just gone with CEO. He could very well be taking the General Manager position, too.)
Immortal’s affairs are then handed over to Lin Hao to manage and oversee. He gets some friendly teasing from Zhu Ying for hiding his identity:
Zhu Ying:
“Question! Best Actor Manager, how does it feel being the best actor?”
Lin Hao smugly answers that it feels pretty good before reintroducing himself as their CEO Lin Hao. Lin Hao’s nonchalant, unaffected response has the team disappointed.
Lin Hu Sheng asks why Li Hao couldn’t just come out and tell them about who he was. This has Lin Hao respond that Lin Hu Sheng (and probably the others, too) wouldn’t have hung out with him.
Lin Hao goes on to express his surprise at how they couldn’t sense the rich air around him, which ends up causing Han Xue to reveal her relationship with Lin Hu Sheng to the whole team:
Lin Hao:
“I sat and worked right under your nose for so many years. Didn’t an ounce of wealthy air about me come out?”
With Zhu Ying remarking how no one could detect such an air when the only air they were familiar with his creepy old man one, Lin Hao points out Han Xue as being someone who could:
Lin Hao:
“Han Xue saw it.”
He moves onto asking whether Han Xue had feelings for him this whole time:
Lin Hao:
“I’ve become the CEO today, so I’m not afraid of asking. I’m going to ask once and for all. Do you like me?”
Because she had bought coffee for him in the past, treated him food and helped him with tasks, he thinks it’s because she likes him.
Emphatically, Han Xue denies it:
Han Xue:
“I don’t! I really don’t!”
To back herself up, she reveals she likes Lin Hu Sheng:
Han Xue:
“The one I like is Hu Sheng!”
Lin Hu Sheng comes in at this point and reveals to everyone that they’re dating, probably not so much shattering Lin Hao’s heart but his ego.
Two secrets revealed (one major, one minor), a third major secret and another minor one is on the verge of being revealed over on Bai Hao Yu’s side. Following the text he received from Diviner, Bai Hao Yu’s on his way to keep the appointment he made with the graphic novelist.
Eric:
“I am his agent. Under our company isn’t there a Bloomsbury Street magazine? Not long after you returned to the country, I was sent over to handle Diviner-related matters.”
Arriving at the meeting place, Bai Hao Yu is greeted by Diviner’s manager first. To his surprise, Diviner’s manager turns out to be his friend, Eric.
Being Diviner’s manager wasn’t intentionally kept a secret from Bai Hao Yu. Eric explains to Bai Hao Yu later in the meeting with Diviner that he only found out recently that Diviner worked at Bai Hao Yu’s Editing Department. By the sounds of things Eric knew little about who Diviner actually was before then, as their means if communication was through email only.
Heading into the room to meet Diviner, Bai Hao Yu introduces himself to Diviner only to realise introductions aren’t needed. Standing before him is none other than Lin Yi Mu.
Lin Yi Mu:
“I know you must have a lot of questions right now. But don’t worry. Everything you want to know, it’ll all be answered: who I am, how I grew up. why I chose this life of anonymity. Remember to help me write an exclusive after you’re done listening.”
Bai Hao Yu and Lin Yi Mu a.k.a Diviner sit down where every piece of information about Diviner Bai Hao Yu needs is all prepared and recorded for Bai Hao Yu to use. Lin Yi Mu even supplies a camera and invites Bai Hao Yu to use it to take photos to support the authenticity of the article.
So, as it turns out, Diviner is the reason printing was halted. The person to asked the printing to be halted was not the Editor in Chief (as we had thought), but Lin Yi Mu himself. It has Bai Hao Yu ask why Lin Yi Mu why he’s doing this. Lin Yi Mu brings up Li Hui Zhen and wanting to save her job, causing a bit of tension in the air, but then Lin Yi Mu expands, telling him that it’s not just for Li Hui Zhen, it’s for all of his colleagues and he even lists Bai Hao Yu as a reason he’s doing this. (So magnanimous!)
Lin Yi Mu:
“If Immortal really can’t continue on, they’ll have the title of having obtained the only exclusive interview with Diviner in the whole universe. I believe they won’t be harrassed about it when they go back out to look for jobs.”
Lin Yi Mu’s willingness to sacrifice his secret identity to save the magazine really is an all-bases covered solution to the Immortal crisis. Should his first-ever interview save Immortal from shutting down, his colleagues and friends would enjoy being number one in sales rank and keep their jobs. Should his interview not be enough, it should save his colleagues and friends from being cast out of the industry because of Immortal’s failure. As Lin Yi Mu suggests, it’s an exclusive interview which no media has ever managed to get. For Immortal to get an interview with Diviner is in itself a huge feat and proof of the Editorial Team’s abilities: it should help them find and land jobs after Immortal’s closure if it were to shut down.
Bai Hao Yu:
“No. I don’t agree to this. You don’t need to sacrifice yourself like this.”
Bai Hao Yu can’t sacrifice Lin Yi Mu’s privacy to save Immortal, his job and everyone else’s job. Even with Lin Yi Mu’s encouragement to freely use him to get Immortal to number one, Bai Hao Yu decides against using this kind of method to do it. Following the meeting with Lin Yi Mu, he calls the printers to advise there was nothing to add and resume printing.
Immortal’s latest issue is published with Bai Hao Yu expecting to see it sans the Diviner issue. To Bai Hao Yu’s shock (and to the shock of everyone at Immortal), Diviner’s story is in there and his identity of being Lin Yi Mu is revealed for the world to see.
Bai Hao Yu rushes to the hotel where Lin Yi Mu resides to (we’re guessing) find out what the situation is, only to find out he’s checked out already, leaving Bai Hao Yu no idea where Lin Yi Mu is.
A text comes through not long after Bai Hao Yu is told by hotel staff of Lin Yi Mu’s departure:
Lin Yi Mu:
“My dear Deputy Editor in Chief. You did exactly as I expected and took out the article. Don’t tell me you’re at the hotel looking for me as expected. I didn’t think that it’d be me who knows you best. Two single men, that’s too sad. So, let’s not continue deepening our relationship. I’ve already left.”
Lin Yi Mu’s the one who had his story published. It seems Lin Yi Mu knew Bai Hao Yu couldn’t do it. What would it say about Bai Hao Yu if he went through with it? Revealing and sacrificing Lin Yi Mu as Diviner really had to be done by Lin Yi Mu himself for it to be right.
Lin Hu Sheng:
“Our Editing Department really has been hiding some talented people.”
Li Hui Zhen:
“Diviner is Lin Yi Mu? Oh my god, how can that be?”
Over at Immortal, shock echoes through the whole team as they flip through the pages to see one of their own revealed to be the famous Diviner they all have said to be his fan.
Lulu:
“With Lin Yi Mu revealing himself like this, can he still come back?”
Meili:
“How can he? He’s so famous, it’d be strange for him to work here.”
Talk about Lin Yi Mu’s fame and not being able to return again has Li Hui Zhen running off to find him after not getting through on the phone. She seems to want to see him to talk about the situation, perhaps to stop him going through with this like Bai Hao Yu. (She seems to not know the magazines are already on the shelves.)
Side note: Lin Yi Mu had intended to go to Li Hui Zhen with his story so she could be the one to reveal his identity to the world. He had recorded it all with her being the listener in mind. Thinking twice about it, though, he decided against it: he envisioned that Li Hui Zhen would never allow him to go through with saving Immortal this way. She’d be against it then cry. He couldn’t handle her crying, which is how he ended up contacting Bai Hao Yu and giving him the recording.
On her way out, Li Hui Zhen runs into Bai Hao Yu who informs her that it’s no use trying to find him. He’s already tried himself. Lin Yi Mu’s left and he won’t return. He hands Li Hui Zhen the recording to listen to back at her desk.
In the recording, Lin Yi Mu reveals his secret identity to her, his family background and how he became Diviner. He was an adopted child of loving Western parents. Other than being known as Lin Yi Mu, he is also known Aiden James, his English name, and has a pen name Diviner.
Lin Yi Mu:
“By chance, I submitted my first graphic novel and by chance, I got a great response. I thought that things would move and develop towards a good direction. I didn’t think it would be completely different to what I expected. A lot of people just wanted to uncover my past. It posed a great threat to my parents’ daily life.”
The pen name was created to protect his parents way of life, which the popularity of his first ever graphic novel threatened. The graphic novel had received great response when he released it to the world and it had caused unwanted attention as a lot of people wanted to find out about his past.
He had hesitated on whether to continue and use a pen name whom no one knew anything about. To his surprise, deciding that he would, it got him an even better response, allowing him to truly do whatever he liked. He was able to reach his dreams without any hindrances.
It was after all this, he entered Immortal. He tells Li Hui Zhen that although he wasn’t able to let his team know about his secret life, he really did treat them all as family. To him, Immortal was his second home.
And this is basically Lin Yi Mu/Diviner’s story. He leaves Li Hui Zhen with wanting her to use it to write an exclusive on Diviner before joking around and farewelling her for the very last time.
Lin Hu Sheng:
“How can Yi Mu-ge be like that, leaving without saying goodbye?”
Lin Yi Mu:
“Who touched my computer? Let me guess. Lin Hu Sheng, was it you? Did you touch my computer?”
Lin Yi Mu’s sudden departure has Lin Hu Sheng disappointed. It looks like Lin Yi Mu had left without saying goodbye to them, but he hasn’t. He’s recorded them each a short message on his laptop which he had fed to a screen in their office. Interestingly, in this recording, he mentions everyone. Zhu Ying, Ya Ling, Lin Hao, Han Xue, Lin Hu Sheng, Meili, Anna, Lulu, Bai Hao Yu and the Editor in Chief were personally addressed. Li Hui Zhen didn’t get a single mention, which Lin Hu Sheng notices.
Li Hui Zhen:
“That petty man. You said it to everyone. Only to me you didn’t. And he says meeting me was great? You say you’re my big brother? Lin Yi Mu! You told everyone but me!”
Li Hui Zhen is pretty annoyed with Lin Yi Mu for not saying goodbye to her. (We guess that outing last episode doesn’t count and neither does the exclusive interview which had him say his good bye to her.) The feeling persists right into the evening where Xia Qiao tells Li Hui Zhen about her friendship with Lin Yi Mu and how they actually knew each other. Xia Qiao thinks Li Hui Zhen’s angry at her for keeping this fact from her, but she wasn’t bothered by it at all. What bothered her the most is that Lin Yi Mu had considered her as close as his sister, yet he didn’t say anything to her.
Ending the episode, Li Hui Zhen is offered a permanent position at Immortal after Zhu Ying had put in a request to turn her from an intern to an official employee. She’s not rushing to accept this offer though, as she suddenly realise that she isn’t so sure what her goals and dreams are.
In the beginning, she had planned to return to the Logistic Department and become an official employee, but the sudden offer of becoming an official employee at the Editorial Department has her thinking what she really wants to do with her future.
Bai Hao Yu is praised by Headquarters for a well-fought battle following rankings which place Immortal at number one. Bai Hao Yu’s offered the opportunity to further his studies abroad and a reward—which Bai Hao Yu predicts will be a promotion. He doesn’t intend to take this promotion though as he believes it’s not his to take since the success is the result of everyone’s hard work. He can’t take the reward alone. What’s more, he thinks that had it not been for Lin Yi Mu’s sacrifice, it would have been difficult for Immortal to reach number one.
He will take up going abroad to further his studies and asks Li Hui Zhen to go with him. He figures that since she was so unsure of what she wants to do with her future, why not join him in the States? Choose him. Li Hui Zhen does. She tells him she will go to the States with him.
Bai Hao Yu also brings up the marriage proposal he made to her. He had told her that he’d marry her after he succeeds and gets Immortal to number one. He’s now saying he will still do that, but he wants to hold it off because he wants her to be prepared to marry him. Li Hui Zhen agrees and tells him that she will give him an answer and he should prepare himself for it. This has Bai Hao Yu wonder what she’s on about: as far as he’s concerned, she had already given him her answer last time in the park, and it was a yes. Li Hui Zhen plays with him, feigning forgetfulness.

Lin Yi Mu focused episodes really are the best. They make us watch and stare at the screen. They’re always so emotion-inducing. We really liked this episode. Just like how we loved the way She Was Pretty got Kim Shin Hyuk save The Most, we love how Lin Yi Mu was made to save Immortal.
Now all is revealed and Lin Yi Mu’s left, we’re not sure what to wait for in the last couple episodes. It looks like Li Hui Zhen might follow Bai Hao Yu to the States, which if memory has it correct isn’t how She Was Pretty went. Kim Hye Jin and Ji Sung Joon parted for a bit whilst Ji Sung Joon returned to the States and Kim Hye Jin worked on realising her dream of become a children’s book author. Li Hui Zhen was seen talking to a children’s book author many episodes ago so maybe this is still the direction, but it might not happen exactly the same way if she were to go with Bai Hao Yu to the States.
The optimist inside us is hoping Pretty Li Hui Zhen will somehow make the last two episodes good, maybe get us liking the Bai Hao Yu-Li Hui Zhen pairing somehow even.
