Bai Hao Yu personally goes to get his staff back in Episode 36, which see them all return to Immortal. His efforts also lands the team an interview with Taylor Yang, the super popular singer who could rival New Look’s Laimu Sisters and save Immortal from closure. Things looks to be on the up, but news that Taylor Yang has entered into a lawsuit with another singer has the interview cancelled, sending Immortal back to square one.
Who could they invite to feature in their next issue and give them a good shot at reaching that top position in sales that would save Immortal? Diviner of course. Only problem is tracking him down and getting him to agree to feature in their magazine.
Pretty Li Hui Zhen Episode 36 Recap
As if down to three staff members isn’t hard enough, everyone in the industry appears to be shunning Immortal. Calls to guests for interviews are declined and models can’t be booked for shoots. It has the Editor in Chief finally get involved.
She had initially taken a hands off approach and let Bai Hao Yu handle things his way. He had requested she do that when he first arrived. But with the way things are going, there’s not going to be a next issue let alone releasing one that will top sales. Topping sales and saving the magazine isn’t what she seems to be most concerned about, though. Having the Editorial Team who she regards as family leave with possible regret and hate towards Immortal is what she’s most concerned about.
Editor in Chief:
“I’m not just Immortal Magazine’s Editor-In-Chief. I’m also the parent of everyone here. So tell me the truth. Did you really request the assessment?”
The Editor in Chief sits Bai Hao Yu down and have him clarify the situation with regards to the assessments, which has Bai Hao Yu tell her what he told Li Hui Zhen: he didn’t. Headquarters did. They required it. The Editor in Chief’s response is the same as Li Hui Zhen: why didn’t he explain himself if that were the case. It’s a question Bai Hao Yu didn’t need to answer in the end as the Editor in Chief quickly catches onto his intentions. His intentions being that he believes this is a good chance for them to find another job, that this is the best for them and he will shoulder the blame.
Editor in Chief:
“You must be thinking that you’re doing this for their good. But this isn’t the way you should treat family. If you don’t have the courage to clarify this misunderstanding, then you can only leave it to me.”
The Editor in Chief can’t allow things to be left this way. Not only does she not want them to leave with regret and hate, but it’s not how family should be treated. Misunderstandings need to be cleared; he needs to have courage to go to them and explain himself. If he doesn’t, then she will go and clear it up and get them back.
Bai Hao Yu thinks things over. His thinking has him personally going to each and every member of his team to ask them back, a gesture which sees everyone return in the morning (to Lin Yi Mu and Li Hui Zhen’s delight). The team’s return also sees them land the guest they’ve been after, Taylor Yang.
The team hold a little get-together after work to celebrate the feat as well as their return. Things look to be on the up. They’re one step closer to saving Immortal. But as things has it, just went they believe things might just be okay, Bai Hao Yu is delivered news that a law suit’s been filed over some issue between Taylor Yang and a singer. The sensitive nature of the law suit has all interviews rejected.
So, it’s back to brainstorming for someone who could rival New Look’s Laimu Sisters. But, who could do that? Bai Hao Yu comes up with Diviner.
Bai Hao Yu, the Immortal team and the rest of the world find out that Diviner’s Chinese through a post on social media confirming that in this episode. With Diviner’s work being so popular and his identity having been kept a secret, the writer would draw lots of readers to Immortal if they get him interviewed.
But booking him for an interview is not so easy. He’s difficult to track down with how well he hides himself. Bai Hao Yu tries going through a company who translates Diviner’s work, but fails to get a direct contact. This translating company has email contact with Diviner’s agent, but isn’t able to offer the email address to Bai Hao Yu, forcing him to rely on the translating company to pass on Immortal’s request for an interview.
Bai Hao Yu:
“Let’s get married. I’ll join you and see all the scenery you want. Your existence is what this city means to me. I don’t want to be separated from you again. You don’t need to respond to me now. I’ll wait for you. If I can successfully publish the 20th anniversary issue—when that happens—as long as you are willing, we’ll be together forever. We will never be separated again. I will definitely succeed. When that time comes, you can give me your answer.”
Bai Hao Yu proposes to Li Hui Zhen after enjoying Li Hui Zhen’s homemade lunch outdoors and a walk around the city. Though Bai Hao Yu doesn’t make Li Hui Zhen answer him straight away, Li Hui Zhen pretty much accepts Bai Hao Yu’s proposal:
Li Hui Zhen:
“Then you must work hard. You must succeed because I want to smoothly marry the person I like and be together with him forever.”
All Bai Hao Yu needs is Diviner to accept the interview and see Lin Yi Mu (since he is Diviner) not only helping save Immortal and his colleagues from going down as failures, but also show one final gesture in supporting Li Hui Zhen and Bai Hao Yu’s relationship.
Zhu Ying:
“The company sent us a new manager. They say it’s our crown prince who just came back from studying abroad. He’s in charge of publishing and sales. He is also our future boss.”
Despite the possible closure of Immortal, Zhu Ying makes the announcement that they’re getting a new manager. This person is their very own crown prince who’s just returned from studying overseas, a.k.a the heir to the company, the Chairman’s son. Right as Zhu Ying makes this announcement, the camera just so happens to cut to Lin Hao looking unsuspicious, like he’s not the crown prince Zhu Ying’s talking about.
Han Xue:
“What should I do? If it’s not Hu Sheng, then it’s Lin Hao or Lin Yi Mu. Do I really have to choose one between the two of them?”
In Han Xue and Lin Hu Sheng’s department, Han Xue is no longer clinging on to Lin Hu Sheng now she’s found out he isn’t the Chairman’s son. His offer to take her home after the team drinks earlier in the episode is rejected. In the storeroom, Han Xue couldn’t get away from Lin Hu Sheng fast enough when he offered to help her with carrying the beauty products she was carrying.
Han Xue seems disgusted by the thought of choosing between Lin Yi Mu and Lin Hao, though. The sight of Lin Yi Mu trimming his nose hairs with scissors and an electric trimmer across from her desk, and the unkempt Lin Hao snack on his biscuit really don’t appeal to her. If only she could learn to follow her heart and forget about being the chairman’s daughter-in-law.
Xia Qiao:
“Dad, if you have time, how about the three of us enjoy a dinner together?”
The second to last part of the episode sees Xia Qiao starting to accept her stepmother. Her Dad drops by to see how Xia Qiao is doing after becoming financially independent. In doing so, he brings up her stepmother and her sincerity over a home-cooked meal which her Dad prepares.
He has Xia Qiao see how much her stepmother really cares about Xia Qiao, but finds it difficult showing it. “She doesn’t know how to communicating with children,” he tells her. Her stepmother knows Xia Qiao’s never liked her. If she tries to be nice, it’ll come off as an act. If she keeps her distance, it’ll come off as not showing she cares.
But, her stepmother cares about her as much as much as if Xia Qiao was her biological daughter. Xia Qiao’s father reveals that she was so proud of Xia Qiao for becoming the hotel’s best employee she took a photo of it and kept showing it to him as well as bragged about it to all her friends.
Xia Qiao’s father request them both to back off from each other a little. Xia Qiao fires up about why she has to back off. However, she stops mid-sentence and agrees to do so when her father pleads her to do it as a favour for him.
It looks like she’s only submitting because of her father, but this talk, hearing how proud her stepmother was about her becoming best employee at the hotel might have finally have her see her stepmother’s sincerity. Her initial refusal to back off comes off as a habitual response than actual anger.
The scene continues a little longer with a call from Xia Qiao’s stepmother. She calls in check-in with her father. She’s gone away to the US for a vacation. Her father’s mention that he’s presently with Xia Qiao has her stepmother immediately think of Xia Qiao, offering to bring her back anything she might want. Following this call, the the topic goes back to her father making sure she knows that it’s okay to rely on family even though she’s planned on depending on her own efforts to get by. Then, on her own accord, Xia Qiao suggest they should get together sometime and have dinner, all three of them.
Xia Qiao:
“Zhen’er! Hurry and come here! Let me tell you! Just now, I accidentally clicked on that live broadcast of Mogujie and then I opened a broadcast account, and then a lot of people are sending me flowers, likes and things like that.”
Xia Qiao might have discovered her calling: a social media celebrity. Whilst browsing around a social networking site, she happened to create an account on it and have been getting some compliments for her great skin and have been receiving (virtual?) gifts from the netizens for accidentally broadcasting on the social media site.
Li Hui Zhen thinks she could teach people makeup and become a famous person. She’d attract guys for her beauty, and girls for the makeup tutorials.
Li Hui Zhen:
“Fatty Yu, come out and play!”
Bai Hao Yu:
“I’m busy working.”
Li Hui Zhen:
“Hehe, you’re afraid you’ll lose to me, right?”
Bai Hao Yu:
“Are you challenging me?”
And ending the episode, a challenge from Li Hui Zhen to Bai Hao Yu to come out and play. Being busy with work (looks like it’s the weekends with how he’s not in his usual work suit), Bai Hao Yu declines initially, but he might just take it up with his “Are you challenging me?” Guess we’ll find out in the next episode as this is where it ends off.
Comments
Not much to get excited over except the search for Diviner and the introduction of the company’s crown prince entering into the scene soon, which means we will be seeing Lin Yi Mu and Lin Hao reveal their true identity soon!
Li Hui Zhen’s been made to come off lacking during this whole departure of the whole Editorial Team at Immortal. After the Editor in Chief talks to Bai Hao Yu, there’s a small scene following where Li Hui Zhen waits for Bai Hao Yu down in the lobby to drive him home. It’s a scene which follows quite closely to the one in She Was Pretty with a noticeable difference in the way Li Hui Zhen views her abilities to help Bai Hao Yu in his struggles:
Li Hui Zhen:
“I know. I know if anything happens, I can’t help you. Because of my position and my experience, besides making some calls and doing some research, there’s really nothing I can do. But I thought about it. I can stay by your side. No matter when you need me, as long as I can do it, I will do it for you.”
Compare that to Kim Hye Jin’s words:
Kim Hye Jin:
“All this time. It must have been hard not having anyone to lean on. Work you think no one else but you can do, the weight of that must have been scary. From now on, if you’re struggling, struggle in front of me. When you’re having a hard time, do it in front of me. Don’t carry the burden by yourself. Let’s do it together, okay? Let’s do it together, Sung Joon.”
Both versions offer support, and ask for the burden to be shared, but we like how Kim Hye Jin encourages Ji Sung Joon to drop his front and show his struggles. We think She Was Pretty’s scene is a lot better. Pretty Li Hui Zhen’s version, as true as Li Hui Zhen might be about her inability to help with her lack of experience and in her lowly position compared to him, it makes Li Hui Zhen come off not as useful to Bai Hao Yu as Kim Hye Jin is to Ji Sung Joon.
We mentioned in the last recap that Ji Sung Joon showed his struggle after that and fell into Kim Hye Jin’s embrace. Bai Hao Yu, though, there was no letting any kind of front go. He seemed fine and appear like he can still handle things on his own, making Li Hui Zhen appear even less useful.
Onto the next episode. Should be good—at least with regards to the Diviner and the heir parts.
