Episode 12 Recap
Choi Sung Won’s back in the picture looking to draw media and public interest into the death of Ume Hye Rin, which he sees as a way to force Choi Yoo Jin’s hand into giving up control of JSS and Cloud Nine.
Having already gained some media interest into Ko Anna, Ume Hye Rin and the connection they have with Choi Yoo Jin, Choi Sung Won look to generate even more interest with a visit to Ume Hye Rin’s grave before following that with a tribute to Ume Hye Rin in the form of a fashion event.
The visit to Ume Hye Rin’s grave has journalists questioning why such a famous person like Ume Hye Rin is buried under such a shabby headstone. Ko Anna’s apology to her deceased mother for taking so long to visit her grave has one journalist finding it curious.
The fashion event held in Ume Hye Rin’s honour sees Ko Anna drugged up on medicine recommended and supplied by Choi Sung Won in order to be able to appear before guests and walk the runway. Ko Anna is happy to take the medication and trusts Choi Sung Won’s doing this to help her remember her mother as well as expose Choi Yoo Jin for the crime they believe she committed against Ume Hye Rin.
Kim Je Ha isn’t so trusting and seeks Choi Sung Won’s explanation for being so aggressive with getting Ko Anna in front of the public. Choi Sung Won tells Kim Je Ha his exact intention—and that’s to get the public curious about Ume Hye Rin’s death. To do that, the public need to remember her—which is the reason for the visit of her grave and the tribute fashion event.
Bringing Ume Hye Rin back into people’s minds and interest sets up the perfect backdrop to making an article about Choi Yoo Jin being behind Ume Hye Rin’s death go viral. Following the fashion event which, on the whole, sees Ko Anna successfully get in front of guests and walk the runway without major issues, Choi Sung Won follows this up with the release of an article containing incriminating accusations about Choi Yoo Jin. The article accuses her of having an affair with Ko Joon Ho who was married to Ume Hye Rin at the time. This affair led to the birth of Ko Anna and Ume Hye Rin blackmailing Choi Yoo Jin for money when she found out about Ko Anna. This blackmailing and not being able to handle it anymore is what the article mentions as driven Choi Yoo Jin to kill Ume Hye Rin.
To make sure this article didn’t bring significant hits to Jang Se Joon and his chances of winning presidency, Choi Sung Won does mention Jang Se Joon and Choi Yoo Jin’s marriage as an act, but the fact that the Ume Hye Rin-Choi Yoo Jin matter all happened during their marriage is mentioned as an incident that occurred before Choi Yoo Jin and Jang Se Joon married.
This viral story sets up grounds for a defamation case which Choi Sung Won uses to have the 14-year-old Ume Hye Rin case reinvestigated. Choi Sung Won has been saying his only reason for creating all this media attention is to being Choi Yoo Jin to justice and free Ko Anna and Jang Se Joon from her clutches, but it’s looking like it might be more about putting pressure on Choi Yoo Jin to hand over the power she holds with JSS and Cloud Nine under her ownership. Pressure he manages to put on Choi Yoo Jin, but it doesn’t go the way he hopes (as the end of the episode reveals).
The release of the article makes Choi Yoo Jin scoff at the absurdity of the claims, especially the detail about Ko Anna being her daughter. She doesn’t attempt to hide from the media following such an incriminating article. Despite being the talk of the town and certainty she’d be hounded by journalists about the claims in the article, Choi Yoo Jin carries on as normal, choosing not to take Chief Kim’s suggestion of cancelling the volunteer work she has scheduled for the day.
She remains relatively calm and unaffected as she goes about her volunteer work setting up chairs and serving food, but then journalists turn up looking for her response over Choi Sung Won’s defamation case. As she’s been out the whole day and Chief Kim’s been busy snapping photos of Choi Yoo Jin’s good deeds, Choi Yoo Jin’s caught completely unaware by the journalists’ questions wanting her reaction to the news that police have decided to reopen Ume Hye Rin’s case because of Choi Sung Won’s defamation case. Hearing this, Choi Yoo Jin faint right in front of the journalists.
Choi Yoo Jin being such a great actress in front of people when she needs to be, her collapse is seen as yet another act by Choi Sung Won. The JSS President thinks it has to be an act, but he doesn’t look so sure about it. Chief Joo believes Choi Yoo Jin’s not putting on an act, and he is right. It was no act.
Choi Yoo Jin is transferred to a hospital ward to recovers after being brought to the emergency department initially. Choi Yoo Jin gets a visit from JSS Master Song Young Choon. In past episodes, he’s been shown to know quite a bit about Choi Yoo Jin’s matters. A lot of what Kim Je Ha knows about Choi Yoo Jin, the JB Group, Jang Se Joon, Ko Anna and Ume Hye Rin is through Song Young Choon’s knowledge of the situation. He’s been explaining his familiarity with the situation as being because he’s been serving Choi Yoo Jin and being in the JSS for so long. It looks like his relationship with Choi Yoo Jin is a lot more familiar than most.
His hospital visit shows a very close, familiar relationship where honorifics are dropped and he can call her by her first name. He’s even able to suggest leaving Ko Anna alone. Suggesting Choi Yoo Jin to leave Ko Anna alone seems to be the purpose of his visit. He tells her that if she isn’t able to then he won’t be able to stop doing what his morals tells him to do. Song Young Choon not only seems to know a lot about Choi Yoo Jin, but he seems to know everything about this Ko Anna, Ume Hye Rin situation.
Whether Choi Yoo Jin is the real killer is no longer a secret—at least that’s what a flashback showing Choi Yoo Jin straddling Ume Hye Rin and injecting some substance into her neck would like us to believe. A visit Choi Sung Won and Ko Anna makes to a prison after their visit to Ume Hye Rin’s grave has a prisoner there recount the night Ume Hye Rin was killed. This prisoner was there that night looking to steal from Ume Hye Rin, unaware the room he’d snuck into the one belonging to such a famous person. Not long after his entrance, he saw another person entering her room. This person he saw he claims is Choi Yoo Jin. He doesn’t say Choi Yoo Jin’s name, but refers to her as the person he saw sitting beside Ko Anna when she was doing an interview with Ji Yeon on live TV.
We can’t help to think there’s more to the flashback that will explain away this account incriminating Choi Yoo Jin as the killer. Past flashbacks had Ume Hye Rin lying on the floor with a spilt bottle of pills. The prisoner’s account of things stopped before this. The fact that Choi Sung Won is the one arranging this meeting for Ko Anna comes off quite suspicious.
Choi Yoo Jin denies being the killer. She neither personally killed Ume Hye Rin nor had someone do it for her. This denial comes after Kim Je Ha visits her ward looking for a straight answer from her.
Kim Je Ha doesn’t believe Choi Yoo Jin killed Ume Hye Rin. He reasons that it’s not in Choi Yoo Jin to leave any witnesses alive if she had actually killed Ume Hye Rin. He should know since he experienced first hand what happens to people who witness something they shouldn’t. So, it makes a lot of sense that if what the prisoner said is true and he had witnessed Choi Yoo Jin kill Ume Hye Rin then there’s no way he’d be alive to tell the story. But Ko Anna seems to firmly believe Choi Yoo Jin killed her and have joined forces with Choi Sung Won—someone who Song Young Choon describes as even more aggressive than Choi Yoo Jin, which worries him. He also needs to know in order to be able to decide whether he should hold Ko Anna back or let her be.
Interestingly enough, although Choi Yoo Jin denies having killed Ume Hye Rin, she tells Kim Je Ha to let Ko Anna be. It looks like she’s listened to Song Young Choon’s request.
With Choi Yoo Jin denying any involvement in Ume Hye Rin’s death, it has Kim Je Ha curious as to why she would let Ko Anna and Jang Se Joon believe she had killed Ume Hye Rin. This has Choi Yoo Jin explain a reason that’s been mentioned once before: it was the only way to keep Jang Se Joon from leaving her that night. Making Jang Se Joon believe she killed Ume Hye Rin allowed her to appear capable of killing Ko Anna. It was the only way to control Jang Se Joon. She then adds that the murderer is someone she knows, but she can’t ever say who it is.
If words aren’t enough to convince Kim Je Ha, Choi Yoo Jin goes further with giving Kim Je Ha full access to Mirror so that he is able to have any questions he wants answered including questions about Choi Yoo Jin herself.
This surprises him. Of all people, why would she entrust such power to him? Choi Yoo Jin explains it’s because of the amount of trust he had in her. He had deleted the email that contained all that incriminating footage of her. That email was like a lifeline for him, the one thing that would guarantee to keep him alive, yet he deleted it. To her, Mirror is like her lifeline. So, to show him the same level of trust, she was entrusting him with full access to Mirror.
What’s more, with the defamation case/reinvestigation of the Ume Hye Rin case underway and being uncertain what her enemies will do in the meantime, she needs someone to be able to access Mirror. That person can only be Kim Je Ha.
With Choi Yoo Jin having handed over full access of Mirror to Kim Je Ha, she makes her trip to the police station the following day. With Jang Se Joon by her side, the news media broadcasting live to all in the country, and her supporters and enemies watching, she makes a surprising move to reveal that Ko Anna is her daughter. A daughter in her heart. Biologically, though, she’s not. Biologically, Ko Anna is Jang Se Joon’s daughter.
And that’s the end of Episode 12. What a great last scene! We didn’t even realise the episode had come to an end because we loved how it all turned out. Looks like her time in the hospital gave her some time to think and it resulted in deciding to reveal the truth about whose daughter Ko Anna really was.
We really hope there’s no twist and Choi Yoo Jin really is the victim in all of this. Choi Yoo Jin being made to take all the hits while Jang Se Joon is left right out of a situation he created makes us roll our eyes! The release of the article had people online submitting nasty comments about Choi Yoo Jin and mostly pity for Jang Se Joon. Argh. There’s no pity on our end.
If Choi Yoo Jin isn’t the killer then who could it be? Choi Sung Won? He’s got connections to psychiatrists and access to medication. He’s been coming off as quite suspicious, but he just doesn’t come off as the murdering type. Chief Kim. She’s capable of it for sure. Maybe she went and acted on her own like she did with trying to kill Kim Je Ha and Ko Anna. Ko Am Wook? This name was brought up once in an episode in the first half of the drama and never mentioned again. He was said to be the legal father of Ko Anna. Could it be him? It’d be a little bit anti-climatic if it was him, especially since he’s never since been mentioned let alone appeared as a character. What about Master Song Young Choon? Super unlikely, but in a drama, anything is possible.
Choi Yoo Jin’s eyes welled up from what looked like anger when Song Young Choon suggested she leave Ko Anna alone. Then when Kim Je Ha asked her about whether she was the killer, she had red, tearful eyes again. Who or what would cause that kind of reaction?
A bit of development we found interesting just before the episode ended, Choi Yoo Jin’s decision to reveal the whole truth about Ko Anna seem to come after hearing Choi Sung Won talk about his apparent stance against JB Group becoming a part of Jin Han Group and the distrust he has in his father-in-law, the Jin Han Group chairman. Right after Kim Je Ha left Choi Yoo Jin at the hospital, Choi Sung Won revealed how he was against a merger with Jin Han Group. He seemed quite aware of how eager his father-in-law wanted Cloud Nine. The reason for that is Cloud Nine and the JSS is what stands in the way of an acquisition of JB Group. The surveillance Cloud Nine has on JB Group is what has stopped JB Group from acquiring Jin Han Group and seemingly Jin Han Group from acquiring JB Group.
Their father intentionally divided ownership of assets the way he did for that reason. Choi Sung Won marries Jin Han Group Chairman’s daughter and he gets JB Group. Choi Yoo Jin gets Cloud Nine and JSS. Forming a partnership like this allowed JB Group to survive the Asian Financial Crisis, but with Cloud Nine and JSS under Choi Yoo Jin, it prevents any acquisition of either company as Choi Yoo Jin kept watch over JB Group.
This makes us wonder if it was hearing this that made Choi Yoo Jin finally decide she didn’t need to hide that secret of Jang Se Joon’s. How does knowing the reason behind her father’s actions, Choi Sung Won’s stance against a merger with Jin Han Group, and Cloud Nine being the thing that stops the merger affect everything that’s going on and save Choi Yoo Jin from it all? Guess we’ll find out soon
And one last thing: Choi Yoo Jin zooming in on Kim Je Ha whilst reading an article about the Ume Hye Rin tribute event. We found that interesting! Does she secretly have a bit of a crush on Kim Je Ha? : oO : oO. We’re really enjoying how the drama has built the relationship between Choi Yoo Jin and Kim Je Ha. They started off threatening to kill each other and now Kim Je Ha’s Choi Joo Yin’s most trusted person, and Choi Yoo Jin is hopefully someone Kim Je Ha respects and trusts as well.
