This is the English translations for the Behind the Scenes of Love Cuisine, Episode 6 (料理高校生 – 第6集 BTS). We’d liked to give a head’s up and say that there are some parts of the BTS (behind the scenes) that we did struggle to hear and translate and we’ve made notes stating our inability to translate the part. Our primary language is not Mandarin-Chinese and we translate by the Chinese subtitles that are supplied in the videos.

FANG XIAO ROU
What is it? Does competing against Shi Wen make you that nervous?
LEGO LI
_________
(NB: Lego Li adds a comment in the background which we’re unable to hear. There are no Chinese subtitles. Sorry!)
Duncan Chow acts up and repeats Allison Lin’s line in a high sing-song voice.
DUNCAN CHOW
Super nervous!
FANG XIAO ROU
Alright. Don’t be nervous. Relax.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Possessed by Gudetama.
(NB: Gudetama is an egg yolk character which Sanrio created, a company which focuses on producing cute products and video games. Gudetama’s Chinese name literally translates to Brother Egg Yolk.)
FANG XIAO ROU
As long as you do your best, you’ll be fine.
DUNCAN CHOW
(answers Fang Xiao Rou in a high-pitched voice)
Okay.
Lego Li flicks a hand, gesturing the students to follow along. He raising his hands then drops them.
FANG XIAO ROU
(to the students)
Okay. Come. Close your eyes.
Lego Li brings his hands in front of him again as does Duncan Chow in preparation for Allison Lin’s next line.
FANG XIAO ROU (CONT’D)
Take a deep breath with me. Breathe in, two, three, four!
Duncan Chow breathes deeply, lifting his face towards the sun, wide grin on his face as he takes in air with wide open arms. Lego Li inhales more modestly, lifting his arms close to his chest. Lego Li breathes in before mouthing Allison Lin’s lines in a mocking way.

The most hardworking.
He turns to grin at the camera momentarily, finding the cheer amusing.
FANG XIAO ROU
Si Ping Culinary School!
STUDENTS off screen
Won’t give up!
FANG XIAO ROU

ON-SCREEN TEXT
The concerned party are unwilling.
(NB: text possibly is referring to Lego Li and Duncan Chow since the latter is the one delivering the incorrect line and Lego Li is who he mentions in the line.)
Behind the scene footage goes back to normal speed. Lego Li informs Duncan Chow about his mistake.
LEGO LI
(pointing to himself)
Was it your meaning to have me shout?
DUNCAN CHOW
(oblivious)
No, it was for Teacher Wen to shout.
LEGO LI
You just said Teacher Han.
Duncan Chow bursts out laughing upon hearing the mistake. Lego Li repeats the fact again.
DUNCAN CHOW
Really?
LEGO LI
You just said Teacher Han.
Duncan Chow turns towards the direction of the director.
CREW MEMBER off-screen
Will that be a problem, Director?
LEGO LI
(to the Director)
That’s not a problem?

Duncan Chow raises his hand in apology to those around him.
DUNCAN CHOW
Sorry.

Duncan Chow spins around to speak to the camera.
DUNCAN CHOW
(grinning)
That’s right. I’m wet.
Duncan Chow breaks into a chuckle.
DUNCAN CHOW (CONT’D)
It’s because the weather is very hot. That’s why I’m sweating so much.
Duncan Chow shows to the camera his light blue jacket.
DUNCAN CHOW (CONT’D)
Wardrobe is considerate, too. They got a jacket ready for me. They were afraid I’d get cold.
ON-SCREEN TEXT

Time jump. Camera cuts to Lego Li talking about Allison Lin.
LEGO LI
But it’s fortunate it’s Allison.
Interviewer says something inaudible in the background which has Lego Li nod.
LEGO LI
Allison is considered light. Really.
Cut to shot of Lego Li crouched down and looking behind him. He sees Allison Lin stand behind him: her head is levelled with her left arm and hand which is extended in front of her. Lego Li follows her gaze, turning around to the wall on his right. He notices their shadows and quickly connects with what Allison Lin is doing. She’s trying to make her shadow on the wall pat the head of Lego Li’s shadow.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Lego Li)

Lego Li begins to bob his head up and down to make his shadow look like Allison Lin’s shadow is patting him.

How many times must you sprain it?!
Fang Xiao Rou turns her attention to Han Jie, having previously had it on her ankle.
FANG XIAO ROU
It’s not like I want this!!
HAN JIE
Iron ankles.
FANG XIAO ROU
What iron ankles are you on about? It’s my glass ankles.
Fang Xiao Rou holds her ankles in both her hands and winces in pain as she throws her head back.
HAN JIE
You sprained your ankle so many times. You sprained it quite a bit.
Han Jie shakes his head.

ON-SCREEN TEXT
Ah Sheng travels the corridors on a hoverboard segway.
(NB: We’ve translated the text as “hoverboard segway” since that’s what he’s travelling on. The Chinese is “飄移的法寶” which we believe literally translates to “drift talisman”.)
Hong Yan Xiang spread out his arms as he rolls across the room.

Time jump. Hong Yan Xiang extends his arms towards a crew member to help himself balance. Allison Lin is just beside him, watching.
HONG YAN XIANG
Coming off the segway is a problem.
Hong Yan Xiang attempts to get off the segway with the crew member’s help and ends up losing his balance. He slips and falls backwards. The crew member manages to save Hong Yan Xiang from hitting the ground and falling flat on his back. Allison Lin (who’s only visible from the shoulder down) runs away from Hong Yan Xiang’s embarrassing moment.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Hong Yan Xiang)
Weak legs.
Hong Yan Xiang laughs at the mishap. He returns upright with the help of the crew member and points at the camera for catching this on tape. He laughs at himself and tries to run away from the camera.
CREW MEMBER
You’re super embarrassing. All your efforts have gone down the drain.
(NB: Not entirely sure if it’s the crew member who says this. The set is very dark and hard to see.)

Hong Yan Xiang gets up and pretends to be stopped, falling back to the ground. Lego Li gets up half way before he does another flip, this time a 360-degree sideway flip.

I flip.
Lego Li flips again to land on his back.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Lego Li)
I flip, flip, flip.
Lego Li cups his head and yells out as if he’s been kicked in the head. Lego Li gets up, staggers and points off into the distance, left of the shot. Hong Yan Xiang gets up and runs out of the shot, making his escape behind Lego Li.
Cut to the NG (no good) take.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
NG version.
Hong Yan Xiang is hiding behind a tall bush, back facing to the camera with Lego Li standing a short distance behind Hong Yan Xiang. Camera pulls the shot back to reveal the director and boom operator standing in the same vicinity as Lego Li.

DIRECTOR
Hong Yan Xiang, you have to wait for my call.
Hong Yan Xiang gets up, laughs and apologises.

LEGO LI
I was hit. When I was hit by him just now, I…
Lego Li bends down out of shot and pops back up into shot before leaping and angles off sideway, away from the camera.
LEGO LI (CONT’D)
I then threw myself towards this side.
Lego Li returns towards the camera, continuing his laughter.
LEGO LI (CONT’D)
I haven’t thrown myself, yet. I haven’t thrown myself.
(NB: He appears to be talking about not having prepared to throw himself before Hong Yan Xiang kicked him. Hong Yan Xiang just did it regardless of whether Lego Li was ready.)
Hong Yan Xiang, who’s by the landing mat a short distance from Lego Li, laughs in the background.

Lego Li stays down as he watches Allison Lin being tended to by the hair stylist. He begins to act out a suggestive scene as the hair stylist starts spraying hairspray.
LEGO LI
What are you thinking of doing?!
Allison Lin turns her attention to Lego, grin on her face.
LEGO LI (CONT’D)
Don’t pressure me.
Allison Lin cups her mouth with her hands and begins to giggle quietly.
ON-SCREEN TEXT

ALLISON LIN
Huh?
ON-SCREEN TEXT

PHOTOSHOOT FOR SPOP, SUPERMARKET LOCATION Lego Li and Allison Lin

LEGO LI
I’m going to start bundling people now.
Lego Li quietly roars.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Lego Li)
Shout!!!!
Allison Lin doesn’t react to Lego Li as he drags a long film over her head. She lets Lego Li wrap the plastic around her body.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Allison Lin)
Calm.
VOICE off-screen
She’s a little hypnotised. Allison is very hypnotised.
(NB: Voice probably belongs to someone working with the photographer.)
ALLISON LIN
I’m already used to it.
Allison Lin lets out a laugh as Lego Li continues to try wrap Allison Lin in the film of produce bags.
Slight time jump. Camera angle cuts from the right to the left. Lego Li is wrapped in a layer of the produce bags. (He’s wrapped himself in the bags instead of Allison Lin.) Allison Lin stands on the right of him, in between the roll of bags and Lego Li, a film of the produce bags crossing the front of the body.
PHOTOGRAPHER off-screen
(to Lego Li and Allison Lin)
Spin, spin, spin. You should spin together.
LEGO LI
Okay. We’re beginning now.
Lego Li starts spinning, taking Allison Lin around with him, bundling them together in a couple layers of the film of produce bags.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Lego Li and Allison Lin)
An indescribably adorable scene.
Cut to a medium close-up of Lego Li and Allison Lin as they do their poses for the photographer. Allison Lin is loosely wrapped in the bags and smiling. Lego Li stands behind Allison Lin, almost cheek to cheek. He pulls a devilish face as he drags the film of bags across. The film of bags begin to tear just as the shot is taken. Lego Li ‘s gaze drop to the tear and moves to grab the bags again to make it appear like he’s dragging the film across again. Two shots are taken before Allison Lin changes her expression to a surprised look and points at Lego Li.

Understanding between Aquariuses.
(NB: The text appears to be referring to how Allison Lin is able to know the kind of expression Lego Li is putting on behind her without actually having seeing it. See the question she directs him below!)
Allison Lin and Lego Li change their expression slightly between a couple more shots. They both release their poses. Allison Lin turns around to face Lego Li.
ALLISON LIN
What strange expressions were you pulling?
LEGO LI
________________
(NB: Unable to hear. Sound is muffled. Sorry!)
ALLISON LIN
I was smiling very sweetly of course.
Cut to Allison Lin sitting on an indoor picnic table, dressed in a blue backless dress and being tended to by crew. Interviewer is asking Allison Lin about her backless dress.
INTERVIEWER off-screen
Is the back very revealing?
ALLISON LIN
It does feel like it. I can’t see it myself.
INTERVIEWER off-screen
You can reverse it and wear it backwards.
Allison Lin laughs at the joke. Her gaze suggests she’s not too keen on the idea, though.
Slight time jump. Allison Lin is still up straight on the bench in her blue dress. She is again being tended to by a few of the crew as they fiddle around with the dress and the necklace she’s wearing.
INTERVIEWER off-screen
Are you cold in a backless dress like that?
ALLISON LIN
I am. I’m super cold! That’s why when I saw that they (the crew) brought out a big coat, I said, “is that coat for me?” It wasn’t. It was for Lego.
Slight time jump. Lego Li, dressed in a bluish grey winter coat blazer and pants, is being tended to by the crew. Allison Lin is at the picnic table she’s been seated not too far from Lego Li.
ALLISON LIN
(pointing at Lego Li)
That’s the Winter Sonata lead, Snow Country’s Prince.
(NB: Allison Lin is referencing 2002 Korean drama Winter Sonata. It’s very hard to hear Allison Lin towards the end of the sentence, so translation goes by just what’s been provided by on-screen text.)
INTERVIEWER off-screen
(amused by Allison Lin’s comparison)
Snow Country’s prince.
Allison Lin watches Lego Li being tended to briefly, repeating her comparison:
ALLISON LIN
Snow Country’s prince.
VOICE off-screen
(asking Allison Lin)
What about you then?
Allison Lin turns her attention back to the interviewers, smiling. The hair stylist arrives to work on her hair.
ALLISON LIN
I have the feel of Frozen actually.
INTERVIEWER
(agreeing)
You do. You do.
VOICE
You definitely do.
INTERVIEWER
You’re Elsa, Fashion Edition.
ALLISON LIN
Only, why is Elsa not afraid of the cold? She indeed is the Ice Queen.
Allison’s eyes and mouth widen as she realises how the way she said “Ice Queen” sounded so much like “Ice Cream”. She lets out a few chuckles.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Ice Cream?!
ALLISON LIN
It sounds a lot like Ice Cream.
RESTAURANT Lego Li
Lego Li has taken hold of the camera with his left hand and is playing around with the camera. He shows the camera something he’s holding between his index finger and thumb (appears to be a gesture that is to form a heart shape). Lego Li looks down at it before bringing it closer to the camera to show us. He takes it back then brings it forth again. He draws the camera around 120 degrees as he continues to bring whatever is in his grasp back and forth. The voices behind the camera laugh.
VOICE off-screen
The teacher’s out of control.
Lego Li continues bringing his index finger and thumb towards and away from the camera.
INTERVIEWER off-screen
That’s enough, Teacher. That’s enough, Teacher.
Lego Li continues and doesn’t let go of the camera.
INTERVIEWER off-screen
That’s enough, Teacher!
Lego Li finally lets go of the camera, pushing it away lightly. Lego Li grins. The camera falls back quickly and focuses upwards as the camera person behind loses a little control over it after the release. Interviewer and Voice thanks Lego Li for his participation in the live broadcast.
VOICE off-screen
Thanks, Teacher.
INTERVIEWER off-screen
Thank you, Teacher.
Lego Li opens his arms and gives off two peace signs before bowing his head.
UNIVERSIADE VENUE Lego Li

ON-SCREEN TEXT
Universiade Scene.
LEGO LI
Actually, wearing this… of course, to the average person, it’s a bit short and very hilarious.
Lego Li brings the hat up and prepares to wears it on his head.
LEGO LI
But I must convince myself that I’m this…
He pauses as he carefully places the hat on his head. He turns to his left and looks beyond the camera, like he’s checking his reflection in a mirror.
LEGO LI (CONT’D)
…great chef. Otherwise…
He checks to make sure the hat is on properly.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Lego Li’s hat)
It’s so high.
He turns his gaze back to the camera.
LEGO LI (CONT’D)
…it’ll be like The Legend of the Swordsman “I love hard wood”.
(NB: We’re not 100% sure we’ve translated and referenced Lego Li’s comparison correctly. We think he’s referring to 2002 Hong Kong drama mentioned above. The “I love hard wood” seems to be from a Stephen Chow film, a 1992 Hong Kong film called Royal Tramp II. In this film, “I Love Hard Wood” is a drug/an aphrodisiac… which doesn’t quite make sense when used in this context so we may have it wrong.)
Lego Li turns back to check his reflection a couple of times, making sure his hat is on properly before turning around to stare down the room which is beyond the camera’s focus. He turns back to express the bashfulness he feels with the hat on.
LEGO LI (CONT’D)
I’m embarrassed…
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Embarrassed. Embarrassed.
LEGO LI (CONT’D)
…With this on, I seem to have a slight inability to meet people’s gazes directly. I feel a little shy.
Lego Li lifts his hand to touch the top of his tall chef’s hat. He circles the rim of his hat with his index finger.
LEGO LI
(joking around)
My head is so itchy.
Interviewer is heard laughing.
INTERVIEWER
You can’t scratch it.
Lego Li confirms Interviewer’s observation.
LEGO LI
I can’t scratch it.
INTERVIEWER
Not being able to scratch the itch is so agonising.
LEGO LI
That’s right.
Time jump. Camera cuts to following Lego Li from behind as he heads towards the Universiade’s kitchen. Lego Li is suddenly stopped by a television screen installed above him as his hat hits it.

LEGO LI
Wait, wait.

Bumping again!!
Lego Li looks up then back at the camera.
LEGO LI
(referring to hat)
It’s too tall.
Lego Li knocks his hat into the back of the television again as he tries to navigate through the preparation bench on his right and the television screen up above on his right.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Three bumps!!
Lego Li laughs. Both hands reach for his hat again, holding onto it. He looks up at the television screen, checking its position. He angles his hat away from the screen and around it, making it through without hitting the screen again.
INTERVIEWER off-screen
You couldn’t make it out of there.
Lego Li laughs, his gaze on the television screen that gave him so much trouble.
LEGO LI
No, I couldn’t get out.
UNIVERSIADE VENUE Duncan Chow, Nita Lei and Calvin Lee
Duncan Chow, Nita Lei and Calvin Lee are at the back of the room for the Universiade in the spectator area. Duncan Chow is leaned over and nodding to Calvin Lee and Nita Lei who are making hand gestures—waving and clasping the hands—nodding, appearing pensive, pretending to instruct, no one saying a word.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Nita Lei and Calvin Lee)
Two people imitating Oscar Han.
Nita Lei kisses her fingertips like the hand gesture Italians use when they say “bellissimo”. As she does this, she flicks the tip of her own nose. Duncan Chow bursts out laughing as does Nita Lei.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to the outcome of Nita Lei’s act)
Tragedy.
Nita Lei covers her mouth, laughing in embarrassment.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Nita Lei)
Embarrassed. Embarrassed. Embarrassed. Embarrased.
DUNCAN CHOW
(laughing a lot)
Oscar Han, not everyone can manage to master.
Cut to Duncan Chow in the Universiade spectator area amongst the spectators and judges. He dances around with two flags tucked in between the back of his collar, one on either side of his head.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Duncan Chow)
Cheer group turned into a lion dance group.
Duncan Chow dances around for a few moments before removing the flags from his collar and laughs.
Cut to Nita Lei standing over Calvin Lee who is sitting behind a long bench in the spectator area. She holds a flag and threatens to hit Calvin Lee with it. Calvin Lee faces her with a grin.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
被霸凌的球
(NB: Unable to translate. Literal translation is “being bullied of ball”. Sorry!)
NITA LEI
I’ll beat you to death! I cackle, you offer gifts.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Has the series changed to filming Si Jian High?!
(NB: We’re thinking the on-screen text is crossing the series to another Taiwanese drama, Shi Jian Qing—we’re not sure.)
Calvin Lee turns to look at the camera.
NITA LEI
I’ll beat you to death!
CALVIN LEE
Look at that. Behind the scenes, this is the kind of personality this actress has.
Nita Lei returns to herself, smiling sweetly.
NITA LEI
I’m not like this.
Camera zooms in to a close-up shot of Calvin Lee with Nita Lei still acting sweetly at the side.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Nita Lei and Calvin Lee)
Another charming couple.
NITA LEI
No, I’m not like this.
Time jump. Calvin Lee sitting in the spectator area, glasses off, arms crossed with a proud grin on his face. Nita Lei and Duncan Chow lay on the table, back of their heads to the camera.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Nita Lei and Duncan Chow)
Collapsed!!
Calvin Lee turns to speak to the camera.
CALVIN LEE
(points to Nita Lei and Duncan Chow)
They died. They all died. Again, this is proof that I’m fresh meat.
(NB: “Fresh meat” is a term used to describe a male idol is young, new and handsome.)
Calvin Lee lets off an almost maniac-like laugh before he stops suddenly. His expression falls, his eyes close and he sleeps for a moment.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Calvin Lee)
Putting on a front.
He bounces right back, fully awake and grins to the camera.
UNIVERSIADE HALLWAY Allison Lin and Amanda Chou
Allison Lin and Amanda Chou in the hallway. Allison Lin is complimenting on Amanda Chou’s Cindy Yao who is dressed in her black chef’s uniform accompanied by a red neck tie. Amanda Chou is bashful, covering her mouth.
ALLISON LIN
That’s right. I think this look of Cindy Yao’s is great. Very elegant.
Allison Lin moves out of shot to allow the camera to focus solely on Amanda Chou. Camera moves down the length of Amanda Chou, down to her feet then back up.
AMANDA CHOU
Black is elegant.
ALLISON LIN
Yes it is.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Cindy Yao)
Proud. Proud.
Allison Lin pops back into the shot and whacks a hand across her hat. Allison Lin laughs before popping out of shot again. Amanda Chou starts to whimper, hands holding her hat.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Not even two seconds has gone by…
AMANDA CHOU
Hitting me so badly, I quickly became not elegant.
Allison Lin pops back into shot, a wide grin on her face.
ALLISON LIN
Black is the most elegant.
AMANDA CHOU
(pointing at Allison Lin)
She doesn’t have a hat on. Where am I supposed to hit?
ON-SCREEN TEXT
That hat is actually a change-over switch.
(NB: We’re thinking this means that the hat can be switched over so that there is a place for Amanda Chou to return the favour to Allison Lin with a whack across the hat.)
Allison Lin’s face straightens as she notices Amanda Chou’s accent.
ALLISON LIN
Why do you have an accent? Where are you from?
AMANDA CHOU
(stands tall and proud)
I’m Taiwanese.
ALLISON LIN
Okay, okay.
Allison points a thumb at Amanda Chou as she looks at the camera. Amanda Chou moves in with her hands on her hips, increase her height, raises her chin and looks down on Allison. Allison Lin turns and is genuinely surprised by Amanda Chou’s sudden promixity.
ALLISON LIN
She scared me! She scared me.
Time jump. Allison Lin signs off for Love Cuisine Episode 6 BTS.
ALLISON LIN
This is the behind the scenes and we hope that it was entertaining.
(NB: Not sure if correctly translated as no Chinese subtitles available.)
Amanda Chou standing next to Allison Lin with her hands on hips pulls a face. Allison Lin turns to her and takes hold of Amanda Chou’s left sleeve. Her pleasant expression drops to annoyance. Amanda Chou playfully pulls away and grins widely.
ALLISON LIN
We’re done filming.
Allison Lin transforms back to a wide smile. Behind the scenes ends.
Julia and Tania:
We read quite a number of people say how cool Han Jie and Lego Li is, but not so much about how cool Allison Lin is. We sort of get it, Fang Xiao Rou’s character doesn’t really help people think otherwise, but then we actually think that. But Allison Lin, she is cool and it’s really a shame Love Cuisine doesn’t show how cool Allison Lin really is. She’s always so full of energy, so smiley. She seems to get along with anyone and everyone. Her reactions to situations are awesome, too. We giggled when we saw her dash off before the camera caught her expression after Hong Yan Xiang fell off the hoverboard segway. It’s was really interesting to see her walk up to Lego Li and push him back onto the landing mat after filming the struggle in the bush with Ma Chong Sheng/Hong Yan Xiang, creating a nice “Han Jie/Fang Xiao Rou” moment/skit. Fan service!
After watching these behind the scenes, we’ve decided that Lego Li and Allison Lin are more fun to watch as themselves than it is as Han Jie and Fang Xiao Rou! Both of them are so playful and responsive around each other. The part where Lego Li just clicked with Allison Lin after seeing her extend her arm in front her and following her gaze to the wall is proof that they have a great working relationship. Allison Lin’s comments about how she’s used to Lego Li’s antics during their SPOP photoshoot suggests it, too. Lego Li and Allison Lin are both awesome… Allison Lin probably just a little more awesome in our view!
Duncan Chow referring to himself as Han Jie, that was so funny! Take 1 – “I, Teacher Han, will shout you coffee.” Take 2 – “Teacher Han will shout you coffee.” Then he goes up to Lego Li and asks if he really said Han Jie and then laughs when Lego Li confirms. Duncan Chow laughing made us laugh. We love this part of the BTS.
