This is the English translations for the Behind the Scenes of Love Cuisine, Episode 5 (料理高校生 – 第5集 BTS). We’d liked to give a head’s up and say that there are some parts of the BTS (behind the scenes) that we did struggle to hear and translate and we’ve made notes stating our inability to translate the part. Our primary language is not Mandarin-Chinese and we translate by the Chinese subtitles that are supplied in the videos.

SCHOOL KITCHEN CLASSROOM Lego Li
ON-SCREEN TEXT
In the middle of practising French.
Lego Li looks at the camera as he says the French brand name, Chanel.
LEGO LI
Chanel.
Lego Li turns his attention to some person out of shot on the right of the camera as he repeats the brand name again.
LEGO LI
Chanel.
The practise of the French brand name has Lego Li utter Chinese phrases similar in intonation and sound.
LEGO LI
Going up.
(NB: the words spoken are 上來了 – Shàn lái le.)
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Possessed by an elevator girl. Going up?!
LEGO LI
Going down.
(NB: the words spoken are 下去了 – Xià qù le.)
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Going down?!
Lego speaks to someone off-screen.
LEGO LI
Chanel—softer or more emphasis?
FEMALE VOICE off-screen
A little more emphasis.
LEGO LI
(emphasising)
Chanel. Chanel.
With his hand eloquently gesturing, Lego Li looks at the camera and repeats the word, Chanel, again.
LEGO LI
Chanel. Chanel.
Cut scene to Lego Li as Han Jie. We take the vantage point of the students sitting in the scene where Han Jie holds a discussion class. Han Jie lectures Tang Xiao Niu about hygiene in the kitchen.
HAN JIE
Xiao Niu as well. Don’t wear those rings or earrings.
Lego Li suddenly stops and goes out of character. With a serious cast, he moves his attention from left to his right. He repeats the French brand name again:
LEGO LI
(to someone off-screen right of his position)
Chanel.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Lego Li’s actions)
Seeking help.
A female voice off-screen repeats the word, Chanel, for Lego Li to hear how it’s said:
FEMALE VOICE off-screen
Chanel.
Lego Li turns back to the front and immediately repeats the word.
LEGO LI
(exaggeratingly)
Chanel.
A glare sets in Lego Li’s eyes after he finishes saying the word.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Lego Li)
The expression seems to exhibit a bit of annoyance.
SCHOOL KITCHEN Lego Li and Allison Lin
Lego Li pulls a wall suction pad off of a wall panel in the bright and modern kitchen classroom set. Allison Lin enters, taking a look at the suction pad Lego Li has in his hand. Allison Lin is tapping at the metal handle of the suction pad. (NB: Allison Lin made a comment as she tapped the metal handle and Lego Li responded to it, but we couldn’t catch it. Sorry.)
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Studying the suction pad used for filming.
ALLISON LIN
What are you doing with that?
Lego Li takes Allison Lin by the arm and turns her around to place the suction pad onto her back. Allison Lin scrunches her face and expresses unwillingness to having it placed at her back.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Allison Lin)
There’s no limits to playing.
ALLISON LIN
Oh, I know! This is CPR.
Allison Lin starts popping her chest as if receiving CPR from the suction pad Lego Li has against her back.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to the way in which the CPR is done)
Eh?! There’s something not quite right about this.
Allison Lin pops a couple more times. Lego Li lets Allison Lin be and leaves off into the background. Allison Lin continues to talk to the camera about the CPR suction pad.
ALLISON LIN
The suction pad is placed at the wrong side. It should be around the front, shouldn’t it?
Allison Lin’s eyes suddenly peer to the right of her and behind (to, presumably, Lego Li who has disappeared off shot and seemingly said something).
ALLISON LIN
(shocked)
The back and the front are indistinguishable?!
Allison Lin looks fully to her right.
ALLISON LIN
Is there a need for you to be like this?
Allison Lin stands there with a vexed smile, waiting for a response. There is no hint of a response.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Teacher Han is shy.
Allison Lin brings her hand up to her right eye and wipes at her imaginary tears.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Wipes tears.
Allison Lin returns back to the camera.
ALLISON LIN
That’s okay. I’ll talk to myself so you won’t think I was sad.
MAKE UP ROOM Ben Wu, Zhang Luo Ti and Hong Yan Xiang
Ben Wu and Zhang Luo Ti hold a female mannequin’s head with a wig between them.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Completely Live From the Sofa
(NB: Not too sure how correct this is. Just couldn’t make sense of the words.)
BEN WU
What thing are you handling?
Hong Yan Xiang speaks from outside of the shot.
HONG YAN XIANG off-screen
Sorry, our performer is becoming oily.
Hong Yan Xiang scuttles into the shot with a small white cloth and begins patting the female mannequin head’s face with it.
HONG YAN XIANG
Here. Touch up. Touch up. She’s going to perform in a while.
Zhang Luo Ti points to the mannequin’s wig which is unruly at the top.
ZHANG LUO TI
Hey, the hair over here is a little unruly.
Hong Yan Xiang goes to fiddle with the hair in that area.
ZHANG LUO TI
Come. Spray. Spray.
Hong Yan Xiang imitates a hairspray can with his hand and makes a spraying sound as he sprays the area of hair on the female mannequin’s head. Ben Wu and the interviewer places a hand in front of the camera.
BEN WU
Shield.
ZHANG LUO TI
Okay, okay, okay!
Hong Yan Xiang exits the shot once the touch up is done. The female mannequin head still has a bit of unruly hair. Ben Wu looks at the mannequin head then burst out laughing.
BEN WU
Okay?!
ZHANG LUO TI
Let’s go. 5, 4, 3—
BEN WU
Hold on, wait! Boom’s showing.
Zhang Luo Ti moves the mannequin head in his hand to look upwards along with him.
ZHANG LUO TI
Where is one?
Ben Wu points beyond the camera.
BEN WU
Right there!
ZHANG LUO TI
(in realisation)
Oh, over there!
BEN WU
Boom’s showing.
The show that Ben Wu and Zhang Luo Ti is putting on resumes.
FEMALE VOICE off-screen
5, 4, 3, 2.
BEN WU
(to female mannequin head)
Hi. How are you?
ZHANG LUO TI
Hello. Wait. A bell sound.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Zhang Luo Ti)
A sudden outburst of an extraordinary situation.
The show once again resumes.
ZHANG LUO TI
5, 4, 3, 2…
Zhang Luo Ti begins voicing for the female mannequin head in a feminine voice.
FEMALE MANNEQUIN HEAD
Mai Zi.
Ben Wu taking on his alter ego in the series has an expression of surprise as he looks at the mannequin head and then Zhang Luo Ti. Ben Wu takes the female mannequin head as Liu Xuan.
WANG MAI ZHI
Liu Xuan.
FEMALE MANNEQUIN HEAD
Follow me.
WANG MAI ZHI
Why?
FEMALE MANNEQUIN HEAD
Duel.
WANG MAI ZHI
(surprised)
D-d…
FEMALE MANNEQUIN HEAD
It’s to duel.
WANG MAI ZHI
Is this okay?
FEMALE MANNEQUIN HEAD
What do you think?
WANG MAI ZHI
I don’t mind. If you are set on having a duel…
Ben Wu suddenly laughs as he looks at Zhang Luo Ti’s serious face.
FEMALE MANNEQUIN HEAD
Well then, use your mouth to duel my mouth.
Zhang Luo Ti brings the female mannequin head towards Ben Wu. Ben Wu snaps back, laughs and slaps the head away. Zhang Luo Ti joins in Ben Wu and doubles over laughing.
BEN WU
School Horror Romance-Comedy! The End!
CAFETERIA Hong Yan Xiang, Zhang Luo Ti and Ben Wu
Hong Yan Xiang is at a table with the female mannequin head. He touches up the face again with a small yellow item he has on his table.
HONG YAN XIANG
Excuse me. Our performer is becoming oily again.
ZHANG LUO TI off-screen
Do you dare to look straight into her eyes?
Hong Yan Xiang stops touching up the mannequin head and looks to the side with eyes down and with a shy smile.
HONG YAN XIANG
(feebly)
Yeah.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Lacking confidence. Reluctant to admit defeat.
Hong Yan Xiang brings the mannequin head to face him directly.
HONG YAN XIANG
Directly looking.
A hand comes into shot. The mannequin head smacks Hong Yan Xiang in the face.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Smack!!
HONG YAN XIANG
(to Zhang Luo Ti off-screen, laughing)
Don’t use our performer in this way.
Hong Yan Xiang looks at the camera as he points in the direction of Zhang Luo Ti who sits diagonally opposite him.
HONG YAN XIANG
He’s smacking people in the face again. Look at him. He’s really extremely awful.
Camera swivels to Zhang Luo Ti sitting right of a relaxed Ben Wu. Zhang Luo Ti gestures to Ben Wu with a finger.
ZHANG LUO TI
Last time it’s durian…
Zhang Luo Ti moves his finger to gesture to Hong Yan Xiang. Camera swivels back to Hong Yan Xiang. He has resumed touching up the mannequin head.
ZHANG LUO TI off-screen (CONT’D)
This time is Liu Xuan.
Cut scene. Jump in footage. The mannequin head is with Zhang Luo Ti. He voices for the mannequin head.
ZHANG LUO TI
(in a gentle, feminine voice)
Continue to watch Love Cuisine, everyone. Break three, break three, break three!
SCHOOL CORRIDOR Allison Lin and Lego Li
Filming the scene where Fang Xiao Rou is in the corridor hearing scary knife sharpening sounds coming from the school’s kitchen classroom. Allison Lin as Fang Xiao Rou has her eyes in the direction of the kitchen classroom with a frightened expression. A voice through intercom comes through.
VOICE off-screen
Who’s head extended out?
Allison Lin contorts her face in extreme dislike to the voice over the intercom.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Allison Lin’s expression)
Hearing these sorts of words right now is especially terrifying.
Cut scene to Lego Li in the shot of the school corridor with Allison Lin. Allison Lin has her eyes looking into the kitchen classroom off-screen on the left of the camera. Meanwhile, Lego Li is far in the background, pretending to be a ghoul. He shows fangs with his right hand up in the air, clawing.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Lego Li)
Ghoul hand.
The soft and gentle school bell reverberates through the vicinity.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Bell sound… The perception is even more so with it.
Cut scene to the filming of Fang Xiao Rou scared out of her wits from sounds of footsteps and speedily walking out of the school corridor with Han Jie in pursuit. The sound of utensils falling onto the ground has Lego Li go out of character momentarily as he looks towards the sound that came from his right.
DIRECTOR off-screen
Okay.
Lego Li continues walking and passes the camera.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Lego Li)
Where is he going?
Lego Li extends his arms outwards and brings his hands to claws like a ghoul. He continues to walk down the school corridor.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
He smells the scent of a human…
Far off in the distance, Lego Li turns right and stops outside an opening. He throws his claw-like hands down. He grins widely as Allison Lin appears through the opening, laughing. They walk back towards the camera. Allison Lin does a delayed reaction: she leans backwards from Lego Li’s attack.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to the scene)
Twilight high school student.
Lego Li comes at the camera. He shows his teeth, brings his arms out, hands to claws and directs his attack onto the camera.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
This vampire is a little adorable.
LOUNGING AREA Lego Li
Lego Li rests on at a lounge sofa, eyes closed and (acting) drunk.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Lego Li)
Not able to suck blood, he’s forced to be drunk.
LEGO LI
(complaining)
Argh! My head hurts. Do you know that?
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Do you need me to go look for Xiao Rou for you?
Cut and jump in time.
LEGO LI
How much is it, today?—Bill, please. How much is it, today?
Interviewer asks someone for Lego Li.
INTERVIEWER
How much is it, today?
LEGO LI
How much is it, today?
FEMALE VOICE off-screen
NT$31,000.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
31,000!!!
(NB: NT$31 000 is ~US$950.00)
Lego Li bolts up, no longer drunk.
ON-SCREEN
Sobers up in a matter of seconds.
LEGO LI
Oh, okay. Really? That expensive, huh?
SCHOOL STEPS Lego Li
Lego Li moves his hands as if fishing. A female lady is seen standing behind him, smiling upon Lego Li’s actions and a crewmember is in front of Lego Li facing away and looking at the papers he has placed on the step walls.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Fishing.
LEGO LI
______
(NB: No Chinese subtitles to help us translate. Soundtrack overlapping dialogue and too quiet to hear.)
Camera loosens to reveal Allison Lin walking onto filming location at the steps.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Xiao Rou arrives.
Cut scene to filming the scene at the school steps where Fang Xiao Rou is being followed by Han Jie and scared by the sound of his footsteps. Fang Xiao Rou screams from fear. Lego Li and Allison Lin block each other and they can’t do a graceful spin.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Block. Block.
Cut to second take of the shot. Lego Li as Han Jie takes hold of Allison Lin as Fang Xiao Rou. All of the folders in Fang Xiao Rou’s hands drop to the ground. Another ungraceful turn.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Spinning again and again to get the spin graceful and circuling beautifully.
Cut to third take of the shot. This time, Lego Li loses Allison Lin. Allison Lin makes a frightened sound, unsteady, falling.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Lego Li’s actions)
Loses hold.
Lego Li is alarmed and immediately reacts with extending his hand towards Allison Lin, but he’s not in the correct standing position and she’s just out of his reach. Allison Lin stabilises herself by the time two crew members in front of her come in extending their hands to grab hold of her by the arms.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Momentarily alarmingly dangerous.
MALE CREW MEMBER
Whoa, whoa, whoa. I’m here. I’m here.
Lego Li has a slight embarrassed grin on his expression as he continues to keep his arm extended to the now stabilised Allison Lin.
Cut to fourth take of the shot.
DIRECTOR off-screen
3, 2, okay.
Han Jie
Hey.
Han Jie taps Fang Xiao Rou on her left shoulder. Fang Xiao Rou screams in fright. Lego Li as Han Jie catches Allison Lin as Fang Xiao Rou and brings her into him and spins.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Spin. Spin. Spin. Spin.
The spin is particularly strong. The handbag hanging on Allison Lin’s right arm slaps and goes around a leg of Lego Li’s before relaxing into position back by Allison Lin’s side.
ALLISON LIN
(with eyes squeezed shut)
God! That was so frightening!
Lego Li loosens the embrace. He looks to someone behind his left shoulder and defends the strong spin that Allison Lin was not happy about with a sheepish smile.
LEGO LI
It was a great success, though.
Cut to filming the scene after Han Jie saves Fang Xiao Rou from lurching forward and Fang Xiao Rou releases Han Jie from her deathly tight hold on him. Han Jie and Fang Xiao Rou are at the left-end area of the steps. Han Jie coughs and takes a moment to bring oxygen to his lungs. Fang Xiao Rou watches on apologetic and concerned.
FANG XIAO ROU
I’m sorry!
Han Jie coughs with incomplete responses. The director calls a cut. Lego Li keeps acting out of breath and in distress.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Lego Li)
Continuing to act.
A moment more of acting distressed from Lego Li before he shows a peace sign up and smiles. Allison Lin covers her small laughter towards Lego Li’s overacting with a hand.
LEGO LI
(smiling sheepishly)
Back to normal.
Cut to a small jump in time. Lego Li taps Allison Lin at her arms as he talks about an expression of his.
LEGO LI
The mean expression I did before—
Lego Li crosses his eyes and maintains it for the camera.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Lego Li’s actions)
Suffocating to the point of crossing eyes.
Allison Lin covers her amusement with a hand over mouth.
ALLISON LIN
It’s cute.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Allison Lin’s comment)
Indeed, beauty is really in the eyes of the beholder.
LEGO LI
I did this expression just before. It’s true.
Cut and jump in time.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Q: 轉風火輪時 what thoughts do you have?
(NB: Word for word translation of 轉風火輪時: switch to wind fire wheels period/season. The characters, 風火輪, together has a meaning of hot wheels or a transport device with wheels like a drift cycle, some other wheel-looking device/thing that is speedy or swift. It’s even a martial arts weapon. We’re not picking up what thing the question is referring to, so unable to translate.)
ALLISON LIN
Go with the wind. I don’t have any other thoughts.
LEGO LI
Go with the wind.
ALLISON LIN
Go, right?
LEGO LI
Take adversity in stride.
(NB: The dialogue was 逆來順受—an idiom. Other translations for this idiom: Resign oneself to adversity / Take things as they come.)
ALLISON LIN
(agreeing)
Mm.
Lego Li moves in front of the camera, beginning to walk away.
LEGO LI
(affirming)
Mm.
ALLISON LIN
Caught it for him.
(NB: Not too sure if this is correct. We’re very lost and don’t have a clue to the topic of conversation currently going on between Lego Li and Allison Lin.)
Lego Li still passing the camera, makes a claw with his far hand.
LEGO LI
Beast tamer.
Cut and jump in time. Lego Li is standing back at the centre area of the steps.
LEGO LI
Ni Lai Shun Shou is a type of animal.
(NB: Ni Lai Shun Shou (逆來順獸), we have no idea what this is. We can only assume Lego Li is referring to a character in Chinese fiction.)
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Ni Lai Shun Shou?!
ALLISON LIN
That’s why it’s called, Ni Lai Shun. Yes.
(NB: We have no idea why the animal is called Ni Lai Shun (逆來順). Word for word translation: negative/opposite, come/arrive, positive/go along with. Lego Li’s following dialogue may enlighten.)
LEGO LI off-screen
Will often meet.
(NB: May also be will often run into, encounter or come across.)
Camera spins forward to Lego Li at the centre area of the steps, fixing the collar of his jacket.
LEGO LI
We will often meet.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
A meaningful and profound metaphor.
Camera spins back to Allison Lin.
ALLISON LIN
I originally wanted to ridicule.
Allison Lin does a quick demonstration of Lego Li crossing his eyes.
ALLISON LIN (CONT’D)
How was that funny?
Allison Lin hold back her laughter, stifling it with a hand to her mouth.
ALLISON LIN (CONT’D)
But now I find it super funny. This is the flavour of life.
Cut to scene: Lego Li and Allison Lin sitting at the steps like men—legs apart and body leaning forward and leveraged by arms on legs, casual. Allison Lin’s expression and sitting position mimics Lego Li’s laid back expression and casual body language.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Brotherly love.
Allison Lin notices her right foot is not at the same angle as Lego Li’s. She quickly adjusts it to match Lego Li’s and then resumes mimicking. Lego Li shifts his shoulders and arms to the left and right and repeats the action. Allison Lin mimics.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Don’t go. In the next section, watch how two people develop feelings in the kitchen.
(Intermission)
SCHOOL KITCHEN CLASSROOM Allison Lin
Allison Lin has a packet of food. She demonstrates her talent of throwing and catching food (some sort of dried fruit) she throws in the air with her mouth. Allison Lin smiles and shows a victorious gesture with her hands after she successfully does the trick.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Quirky trick.
ALLISON LIN
I’m very likely to catch these sort of things.
SCHOOL KITCHEN CLASSROOM WORKSTATION Allison Lin and Lego Li
Allison Lin flours a rolled out dough on her workstation. Lego Li watches on. With a slow-witted and innocent expression, Allison Lin turns to Lego Li whilst she stamps her hands into the floured dough.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Allison Lin’s actions)
Stain. Stain. Stain.
Allison Lin/Fang Xiao Rou pretends to be meeting Lego Li/Han Jie for the first time.
ALLISON LIN
(polite and courteous)
Hello. I’m Xiao Rou.
Allison Lin extends her hands covered in flour towards Lego Li for a handshake. Lego Li doesn’t move to take the hand. He simply looks at it, smiling slightly.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Lego Li)
Don’t think so!
Allison Lin retracts her hand. She talks to the camera.
ALLISON LIN
This person is so petty. With the handshake of the first meeting, he doesn’t even take it and shake it.
Allison Lin returns to playing with the dough below her, patting it. Lego Li continues to watch on with a smile.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Lego Li)
Not concerned.
Allison Lin shrugs and accepts being shunned. She cutely smiles and flours the dough for the camera. Allison Lin imitates a line from Han Jie’s character trailer for Love Cuisine.
ALLISON LIN
“I am the heavenly dish in the cuisine world—Oscar Han.”
Cut and jump in time. Allison Lin imitates Lego Li in the seafood market fish ball segment of the Behind the Scenes for Episode 2.
ALLISON LIN
Imitating the fish paste he made last time.
Allison Lin picks up bits of dough and forcefully chucks it onto the workstation. She turns to Lego Li and directs him a deathly glare.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Allison Lin’s expression)
Be afraid!
Lego Li is calm and unaffected. Allison Lin chucks another piece of dough onto the workstation and directs Lego Li a more deathly glare.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(speaking in place of Allison Lin)
How come he’s not afraid?
Allison Lin continues to glare at Lego Li and chucks another piece of dough—this time slightly weaker. Lego Li begins to crack a smile.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
There’s feelings.
Allison Lin chucks dough again. Lego Li continues to watch and smile. Allison Lin chucks one more time. The dough bounces into her chest and deflects and lands back onto the countertop. Allison Lin grabs the dough back, unimpressed with no reaction from Lego Li. (Allison Lin says something at this point, but no subtitles and couldn’t make it out based on what she said. Most likely commenting on the bouncing dough). She gives up and simply brushes and cleans the mess up below on the countertop.
LEGO LI
It gets more energetic and lively each time.
ALLISON LIN
Really?
LEGO LI
It’s cute.
ALLISON LIN
(excited and lively)
Really? I’m so happy!
Allison Lin turns to scare Lego Li with hugging him with her floured hands. Lego Li shirks away immediately, laughing and expressing unwillingness to have her go anywhere near him with her flour-covered hands.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Avoid.
Allison Lin faces the camera, grinning with amusement.
Cut and jump in time. Lego Li and Allison Lin busily working on their dough at each of their workstations. Lego Li rolls back up his rolled-out dough with one hand.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Lego Li)
Very serious.
Lego Li squeezes and shapes the dough. He looks over at Allison Lin working quietly by herself. She’s stamping the dough below her with the rolling pin she has vertically in her hand. Lego Li suddenly dumps his dough onto Allison Lin’s dough. Allison Lin breaks off from her concentration and looks up with an unimpressed expression.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
The work done is ruined in one second.
Lego Li walks pass Allison Lin’s workstation with no remorse. Allison Lin turns to the camera dumbfounded.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Allison Lin’s expression)
Dumbfounded.
Cut and jump in time. Lego Li is at the sink on the right of Allison Lin, washing his hands. Allison Lin has a rolling pin in her hand and stamps it vertically into the dough. She goes and grabs the rolling pin on Lego Li’s workstation beside her. With an enthusiastic expression, tongue out, Allison Lin uses the rolling pins like drumsticks and starts drumming with them. Allison Lin is amused at herself.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Taken over by the God of Cookery.
Allison Lin is amused at herself. She silently laughs at her own actions.
Cut and jump in time. Lego Li is still at the sink washing his hands. Allison Lin is still playing with the rolling pins. She talks to the camera as a rolling pin indicates to Lego Li:
ALLISON LIN
I’m copying him.
Allison Lin starts drumming with her rolling pins again with her tongue out.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Did you taste Teacher Han’s saliva?!
(NB: This translation is really strange. We keep wondering if it meant anything else and tried to translate it some other way, but no. We also don’t know if there’s a meaning that’s only known by being in the culture. These are the Chinese words: 是吃到韓老師口水嗎?)
Allison Lin immediately drops one of the rolling pins back onto the workstation. Her expression become serious, eyes rolls up to show her whites as she stands with the left hand behind her and waves the rolling pin in her right hand around. She imitates Han Jie in Fang Xiao Rou’s dream sequence in Episode 2 of skillfully and masterfully slicing fish meat into pieces up in the air with a cleaver.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
There’s quite some attitude there.
Allison Lin looks at the camera, smugly, and gestures to Lego Li who’s still washing his hands at the sink behind her.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(speaking in place of Allison Lin)
There’s nothing much to it. I can do it also.
Allison Lin nods. Proud of herself.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Allison Lin)
Proud of herself.
Allison Lin turns to Lego Li. She notices he’s finished washing his hands. He’s shaking the excess water off quite exaggeratedly.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
A schoolboy plot is about to begin.
Allison Lin turns to the camera and is amused by the sight of Lego Li drying off his hands but she turns back to him and becomes annoyed when she is splashed by droplets of water he’s flinging with his excessive actions. Allison Lin’s annoyance disappears immediately. She smiles and wiggles her eyebrows to the camera. Lego Li turns to Allison Lin and asks:
LEGO LI
Why are you wearing an apron today?
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Love dispute.
Allison Lin is momentarily confused by Lego Li’s question. She looks down at her apron.
ALLISON LIN
I have to make dishes. Of course I have to wear an apron—
Lego Li suddenly grabs the corner of Allison Lin’s apron and wipes his hands on it. Allison Lin tries to snap away—
ALLISON LIN
Don’t randomly go lifting people’s skirts!
Allison Lin shuffles back and places an arm on the apron to stop Lego Li from continuing to wipe his hand on it. But, Lego Li advances and continues to wipe his hands on Allison Lin’s apron.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(speaking for Allison Lin)
Annoying pervert!!
Allison Lin pulls and keeps moving back to stop Lego Li, but he continues.
LEGO LI
I just need to wipe my hands.
Allison Lin stops resisting and simply looks at the camera and waits until Lego Li finishes.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
No other choice. No other choice.
Allison Lin turns her attention to Lego Li who is still wiping his hands on her apron.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
He’s drying it so thoroughly.
LEGO LI
An apron is for wiping hands—if not, then what is it for?
ALLISON LIN
(angrily)
Why don’t you wipe on your own one?
Allison Lin goes to grab at Lego Li’s, but he avoids her grab and is able to escape from Allison Lin with timely interrupting words coming from the director. Allison Lin is left to herself, looking at the camera, annoyed.
SCHOOL KITCHEN Lego Li
Lego Li is by the stovetop squeezing pancake batter into a skillet. There’s a couple burnt pancakes strewn about the countertop beside him.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Teacher Han, engrossed in making pancakes.
Lego Li squeezes and draws out a rectangle border with three horizontal bars inside.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Have a go at guessing what character he’s making.
Cut and jump in time. Lego Li has finished making the pancakes. He holds the plate of pancakes and shows it to the camera. Lego Li has made four pancakes: a circular one with 李 (Li) character; a square one with 国 (Guo); another circular one with 毅 (Yi); and a cat-pig-looking one. The three chinese characters spell out Lego Li’s Chinese name.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Huge success.
LEGO LI
It’s quite fascinating.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(arrow pointing to the pancake with 国)
國 – written in simplified Chinese.
(NB: 國 is the traditional Chinese character of 国. Taiwan uses the Traditional Chinese character set to write texts. The Simplified Chinese character set is the set that China uses nowadays in the media. The difference between the two sets are simply the number of strokes. Meaning remains the same.)
INTERVIEWER
It’s really fun to play with.
Lego Li puts the plate of his pancakes back down onto the countertop.
LEGO LI
You can play alone. You can play like this for a very long time at home.
INTERVIEWER
This is quite good for relieving stress.
(NB: There wasn’t Chinese subtitles, so this may not be too accurate. There was a word we couldn’t catch, but it’s something along these lines.)
LEGO LI
This does relieve stress quite a bit. I found another way to relieve stress.
Cut and jump in time. Lego Li is standing akimbo.
LEGO LI
I need to give one to Teacher Fang.
Lego Li looks left and then to the camera and describes Fang Xiao Rou with the words ‘Hate’ and ‘Annoying’. (Lego Li had said a full sentence, but no Chinese subtitles and with background track playing, it made it difficult to attempt a translation.)
LEGO LI
I will write ‘Annoying’ to gift to her.
Lego Li goes to make a pancake with the character 煩 (annoying/bothersome/troublesome).
Cut to scene of Allison Lin waiting.
LEGO LI off-screen
I have a word I would like to gift to you.
Allison Lin looks at the camera, suspicious.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(speaking for Allison Lin)
Suspicious. Suspicious.
Allison Lin’s attention goes to Lego Li, off-screen on her right.
LEGO LI off-screen
Thank you for taking care of me in these two months.
ALLISON LIN
(sarcastically, to the camera)
“N-no. When have I taken care of you? You took care of me much more.”—the usual words.
LEGO LI
Showing my regards.
ALLISON LIN
Oh, okay. Sure. Thank you.
Camera spins around to Lego Li with a flipper in hand and waiting for the pancake to finish cooking.
LEGO LI
Yours is almost ready. Yours is almost ready.
Camera spins back to Allison Lin.
ALLISON LIN
I’m looking forward to it. He isn’t messing with me, is he?
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Looking forward to it as well as scared of feelings being hurt.
Cut and jump in time. The pancake is ready and Lego Li flips the pancake.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Reveal.
LEGO LI
Did it come out?
Lego Li swivels the pancake around with a flipper for the camera to see the Chinese character on the pancake.
LEGO LI
Yes, it came out really well.
Lego Li lifts the pan with the pancake up for Allison Lin/Fang Xiao Rou to see.
ALLISON LIN off-screen
(angry)
I knew it!
Camera goes to Allison Lin speaking to the camera.
ALLISON LIN
It’s because of this word…
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Annoying.
ALLISON LIN (CONT’D)
…that brings about his coolness, you know that?
Camera goes back to Lego Li. He responds to Allison Lin’s comment with the exact words he used in the Behind the Scenes for Episode 4:
LEGO LI
I don’t need your troublesome ways to be cool.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Here we go again. Here we go again.
Allison Lin brings the camera back to her. Allison Lin also plays the game and repeats the line she used in their bickering in the Behind the Scenes for Episode 4.
ALLISON LIN
My troublesome ways multiplies your coolness.
Camera spins back to Lego Li.
LEGO LI
If you don’t annoy me, I’m even cooler.
Camera spins back to Allison Lin.
ALLISON LIN
(questioning, unconvinced)
Even cooler without annoying you? Stop it over there. It’s because I’m around being like…
Allison Lin demonstrates being in distressed and annoying with hands up in the air and screaming.
ALLISON LIN (CONT’D)
…like that. You can then be like, “What? Don’t be annoying!” That’s right. Like that.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to the argument between Lego Li and Allison Lin)
Agree to disagree. Viewers, judge amongst yourselves on who is right.
Cut to Allison Lin standing next to Lego Li with a plate of pancakes.
ALLISON LIN
Can I have a bite?
LEGO LI
(thinking)
Well… in that case you can try the bear, then.
Lego Li holds up the plate containing the bear-shaped pancake.
ALLISON LIN
Huh? That’s a bear?!
LEGO LI
A koala bear—yes.
ALLISON LIN
(surprised, chuckling)
Oh! For the entire time, I thought it was a pig!
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Lego Li and Allison Lin)
Can always fight over juvenile issues.
Lego Li bowls over with embarrassment upon Allison Lin’s view of his koala bear face pancake. Allison Lin brings the plate closer to the camera and points to the pancake that is supposed to look like a koala bear.
ALLISON LIN
You all take a look and see if it looks like a pig.
LEGO LI
Koala bear, right?
INTERVIEWER
It has pig ears.
LEGO LI
It doesn’t have a pig’s nose. It has a koala’s nose.
ALLISON LIN
(to the camera)
The ears of a koala bear isn’t like this also. They are clearly pig ears.
Cut to scene of Allison Lin with the plate of pancake. Allison Lin holds up the koala-pig pancake that Lego Li made with ears that has been eaten.
ALLISON LIN
Okay then! I will then eat the pig he made that he, himself, says is a koala bear.
The pancake fills the camera screen as Allison Lin brings the pancake towards and into the camera before bringing it back to her side and chuckles.
MARKETPLACE Lego Li and Allison Lin
Lego Li and Allison Lin are on set of the location of the charity snack sales part of the episode. With a similar action in the scene where Han Jie takes Fang Xiao Rou off to the side by the wrist, Lego Li brings Allison Lin into the camera’s view by the wrist. He stops walking and holds out his hand, asking for Allison Lin’s other hand. After Allison Lin offers the hand to Lego Li, he brings Allison Lin towards him and they connect by the shoulders as they enter into a ballroom dance-like spin.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Ballroom dancing?!
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Chemistry – 100.
Lego Li and Allison Lin comes back out into a two hand hold open facing position. Allison Lin releases her left hand from Lego Li’s hold and she begins a hip twist on the side by herself, dancing and humming. Lego Li laughs. He releases Allison Lin and moves off.
LEGO LI
(shy)
I don’t dare to dance.
Allison Lin places a light hand on Lego Li’s back as he passes between the camera and Allison Lin.
ALLISON LIN
(smiling widely)
Because there’s a lot of people here watching him, today.
Cut to filming of Han Jie taking Fang Xiao Rou by the wrist to head away from the main stage of the charity snack sale.
FANG XIAO ROU
Hey, where are we going?!
The director calls a cut.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Director: OK.
Lego Li’s in-character-forceful drag comes to a playful drag as he slows to a stop. He brings Allison Lin around from behind him as he purposefully makes himself unsteady: the arm still holding Allison Lin goes up into the air and a foot out to the side. Allison Lin expresses playful dissatisfaction. They eventually break and separate with their opposite direction and movements.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Breaks away.
Allison Lin comes to the camera, displaying a pout and sheepish. She changes to a smile and points in the direction of Lego Li.
ALLISON LIN
In front of the camera, he’s very warm and gentle towards me like this. Beyond the camera, he’ll throw me over the shoulder.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Shoulder throw!!
Cut to scene of Allison Lin sitting by a water garden, expressing her character’s feelings of distress. The filming of the scene of the crowd chanting for Han Jie to eat the macaron after being publicly confessed to by Cindy Yao is in progress.
CROWD off-screen
Eat it. Eat it. Eat it. Eat it.
Allison Lin shakes her head in disapproval to the chanting for Han Jie to eat the macaron.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
(referring to Allison Lin)
Xiao Rou’s real reaction.
Allison Lin turns to the camera. She extends a hand and gestures desperately for the encouragements to stop.
ALLISON LIN
(mouths)
It’s poisonous!!
Allison Lin turns back to the scene before her and inspects the progress of things. Her eyes widen. She holds a hand to her mouth in disbelief. She turns to the camera in disbelief. Allison Lin brings her head down into her hands on her knees. She returns back up a moment later and turns to the camera. She points in the direction of the location of the filming.
ALLISON LIN
(mouths)
He ate it!
Sound of boisterous cheers come from the crowd.
Cut to scene of Allison Lin with the charity snack sale sign prop in her hands, held like a guitar. (The blue plastic sign prop has a similar shape to a guitar and the wooden stick taped with black tape looks similar to the strings of instrument.) Allison Lin strum enthusiastically and rocks out to her humming of what sounds like the opening theme song/intermission track. She suddenly brings it over her head, makes a roar sound then does a rock star guitar smash with the prop. Su Xiao Xuan standing by the vendor stall on Allison Lin’s left laughs, amused. Allison Lin finishes her playing and turns to the camera, smiling.
ALLISON LIN
______ I better not play with it.
(NB: Sorry. Unable to translate the beginning part with no Chinese subtitles.)
Allison Lin directs her attention to someone beyond the camera.
ALLISON LIN
You used it a moment ago?
(NB: not too sure how accurate this is. No Chinese subtitles to help us.)
LEGO LI off-screen
I’ve used it. I’ve used it three minutes ago.
(NB: not too sure how accurate this. No Chinese subtitles to help us.)
Allison Lin has a happy and pleased smile, hearing Lego Li’s words. She holds a hand up in the air and goes towards the left of the screen.
ALLISON LIN
(in English)
Give me five! Yeah!
Lego Li meets Allison Lin’s hand and high-fives Allison Lin.
Julia and Tania Comments:
Oh, we hope we heard the last section right. We notice that these BTSs don’t like Chinese subbing the ends and it makes us wonder why. We strained our ears to differentiate the sounds and tones to get this last bit of interesting scene between Allison Lin and Lego Li. It was oh-so-hard. We really hope it’s right. :o/ :o/. Also, we’re very sorry for the translations at the part after the Han Jie-Fang Xiao Rou scare, catch and spin at the school steps. We just couldn’t make sense of what was going on.
Allison Lin is just so fun! She’s so full of fun! We loved the entire part in the school kitchen classroom with the koala-pig pancake debate. Even that brief scene of Allison Lin putting the koala-pig pancake towards the camera then taking back to her side and laughing after it, we found Allison Lin cool and fun. Allison Lin was very fun in the dance scene with Lego Li where she just goes and randomly adds more to the act and makes it all funny and lively. So cool. And of course, the final scene—loved it! Allison Lin using the sign like a guitar and going full out strumming was incredibly entertaining! Allison Lin really is the life of the party! Love Allison Lin in these BTSs!
The apron-grabbing part was interesting. The director was off to the side watching on when Allison Lin went to grab Lego Li’s apron after Lego Li wiped, wiped and wiped his hand on Allison Lin’s apron. Allison Lin and Lego Li felt like they could really get attention with their acting-bickering! Fortunately, the director said some things and Lego Li immediately exits the scene.
That part where Allison Lin wanted to try a pancake that Lego Li made, the one that he said was supposed to be koala bear and Allison Lin said it looked like a pig, that discussion between Allison Lin, Lego Li and the interviewer about it was interesting. We actually initially thought the pancake design was a hybrid of a cat and a pig. After scrutinising the pancake, it actually does looks like a pig more than a koala; but, the ears actually does not look like a pig’s ear, though. That’s why we thought it was a cat-pig. It actually looks like Hello Kitty. And Hello Kitty (we’ve heard) is actually not a cat, but a girl! Take a look at the capture below of the pancake that Lego Li made. What do you think it looks like?
Watching Lego Li cook, and he’s in that chef uniform, we get muddled; we keep thinking that he’s going to come out with perfect-looking food. But then we see pancakes that’s kinda browned and the pancakes are strewn about on the countertop. They’re not on plates. It’s so cute! It’s cute because we see Lego Li as Han Jie in these BTSs, but he’s actually Lego Li, so he shouldn’t be producing perfect-looking food, but his appearance makes us think he’s Han Jie so we expect perfect-looking food! It’s interesting and cute!
In this BTS, especially the final section of the BTS where they are on the set location of the charity snack sale out in the marketplace, Lego Li and Allison Lin seem to be quite normal. They don’t feel as in-character as we usually find them to be which is quite nice to see. They feel less like Han Jie and Fang Xiao Rou. We enjoyed this last part of the BTS.
Actually, we enjoyed quite a bit of this BTS! We remember Episode 5 to be an eventful one with Cindy Yao coming in and Han Jie’s identity as Oscar Han revealed to Fang Xiao Rou and the students. As well, it was the episode that had Han Jie show a bit of a different side to him—the Hell’s Kitchen chef side of him which was very interesting character development. And then of course, there was the cool cliffhanger of Han Jie following a terrified Fang Xiao Rou in the school corridor. We remember thinking how we couldn’t wait to see the resulting scene from this cliffhanger! It’s no wonder this BTS was so good to watch! :oD :oD.
