This is the English translations for the Behind the Scenes of Love Cuisine, Episode 4 (料理高校生 – 第4集 BTS). We’d liked to give a head’s up and say that there are some parts of the BTS (behind the scenes) that we did struggle to hear and translate and we’ve made notes stating our inability to translate the part. Our primary language is not Mandarin-Chinese and we translate by the Chinese subtitles that are supplied in the videos.

Li Zhi Chao flips himself around and brings himself upright in the normal fashion of simply standing up. He faces Han Jie.

A smile slowly breaks out onto Lego Li’s expression to Calvin Lee delivering his lines incorrectly. Calvin Lee notices his error immediately.
LI ZHI CHAO
(screams)
AHHHH! I’ve said it wrong!

Calvin Lee walks off the shot immediately as Lego Li doubles over in laughter.

Calvin Lee suddenly cups his hands over his mouth and makes vomiting sounds.

Calvin Lee laughs. The Director laughs at Calvin Lee’s prank then leaves. Lego Li, he joins Calvin Lee. He cups his hands below Calvin Lee’s mouth to stop the imaginary blood from flowing.

Lego Li looks up. He puts down his wok hoak (ladle). He brings himself to a sitting position and places a hand imitating a phone to his left ear.

With a hand to an arm, Nita Lei takes Calvin Lee away from the visitation. Both Calvin Lee and Lego Li have sad and reluctant expressions as they put their phones down. Calvin Lee extends a hand to Lego Li in a wave.

Lego Li extends a longing hand, fingers touching the glass. It takes Calvin Lee a moment to notice Lego Li’s hand (his attention is with Nita Lei, smiling amused at her contribution to the play) before Calvin Lee mirrors Lego Li’s actions.

The comment has Lego Li interject. It begins a small tiff between Allison Lin and Lego Li. While Allison Lin looks at the camera as she answers, Lego Li has his eyes out in the direction of the roadside curb on the left of the camera.

Is it not because you’re very troublesome?

Lego Li walks off without further words with a slight amused smile. Lego Li’s response bowls Allison Lin over. Her face contorts. She laughs as she has the sides of her face cupped in her hands, shocked and in disbelief.
ALLISON LIN
I want to throw up! “I can’t deny…”
ROADSIDE CURB Allison Lin and Lego Li
Filming the scene after Han Jie gets knocked to the windscreen by Fang Xiao Rou. Fang Xiao Rou stands before Han Jie, apologetic as she holds onto the car’s side mirror that broke off from the clash between the two.

I’m sorry. I’ll buy another one for you.
Han Jie walks away from Fang Xiao Rou unimpressed.

The camera follows Han Jie go over to the driver’s side. A hanging tree branch gets in Lego Li’s face as he delivers his line.

Don’t get in the car.

Stormy theatricals.
Allison Lin walks off. Lego Li forcefully swipes the tree branch away from his face and to the side. Lego Li lets it go and shakes off the feeling with a shake of his head.

Allison Lin interrupts Lego Li from his speaking as she goes to take a look at his shot glass with the liquid he flowed right back into the shot glass. She puts her mouth close to it, looking to be taking a sip from it.

Allison Lin withdraws and goes back to her seat. Lego Li resumes speaking.
LEGO LI
This is my own saliva. It’s okay.
In one quick shot, Lego Li downs the drink.

As Nita Lei delivers her line, Allison Lin as Fang Xiao Rou directs a deathly glare at Lego Li as Han Jie and swipes a hand across her neck, imitating a knife going across the neck.

Lego Li put two fingers at his neck then imitates blood splurting out with them.

Allison Lin and Lego Li begin each of their character’s drinking contest. The footage is sped up as Lego Li and Allison Lin go through their ten shot glasses—where we see Lego Li going through them at a speed much faster than Allison Lin does. The footage returns to normal when Lego Li has one more shot left. He finishes his last shot. Allison Lin has two left.

Lego Li waits and observes Allison Lin continue to down her shots slowly. He has his head tilted off to the side, watching her relaxed and with his a corner of his lips curled upwards slightly in amusement.

Lego Li snaps his arms to cross around his body, smug. The directors voice through a megaphone enters at this point and stops the filming.

Lego Li unfolds his arms from his body and turns to one side, continuing to display smugness towards Allison Lin. Allison Lin breaks out a huge smile with liquid still in her mouth. In the background, Nita Lei has an amused smile on her face.

Proud of oneself. Proud of oneself.
Allison Lin places the shot glasses she has in her hands back on the table.
NITA LEI
(to Allison Lin)
You’ve lost. You didn’t finish them.
Lego Li points at Allison Lin, amused. Both Allison Lin and Lego Li take a seat back at the table where Nita Lei is seated.
NITA LEI

Ben Wu starts to nibble at it, but gets knocked into the durian fruit when Zhang Luo Ti’s hand pushes the fruit into him. Zhang Luo Ti laughs at Ben Wu’s face which has small bits of durian on his nose. Ben Wu laughs.

Zhang Luo Ti extends his hands to Ben Wu in apology.

Hong Yan Xiang laughs and claps in amusement. Laughter from some others in the room are heard also.

Camera moves closer to Ben Wu’s face to show most of his nose smothered with the juice of durian fruit with some flesh hanging off his nostril.

Really? It’s really cute like this?

Cut scene to Ben Wu wiping his nose off of durian with a tissue.
ZHANG LUO TI
I’m sorry. I’ll help you touch up your makeup later.
Ben Wu moves his head away from Zhang Luo Ti’s hands that are placed in front of his face.
Hong Yan Xiang gets off his seat and stands next to Ben Wu as he directs his comment to Ben Wu.
HONG YAN XIANG
You know, what I just then, it was very subtle.
Hong Yan Xiang switches his attention to Zhang Luo Ti and talks to Zhang Luo Ti about what he saw in Ben Wu’s reaction to being knocked into the durian fruit.
HONG YAN XIANG
He had a 0.1 second of anger. But the camera was continuing to film.
Zhang Luo Ti, off-screen, is heard expressing sounds of amazement. Hong Yan Xiang goes back to his seat. Ben Wu continues to wipe durian of his face with the tissue. Zhang Luo Ti then brings himself in front of the camera and holds his hands in a pleading gesture.

Cut to scene: The guys have moved to a table by the wall. Zhang Luo Ti has a U-shaped, devil character pillow in his hands. The seams have opened at the bend and some sort of stuffing that’s streaming out from it.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
The pillow has teared open… (It was brought along for Mai Zhi to knock Xiao Niu)
(NB: the translation had the word, ‘K’. We’re not at all familiar with Taiwanese slang, but we have assumed ‘K’ means knock.)

More of the stuffing in the pillow flows as Zhang Luo Ti flips it to look at his destroyed pillow. Zhang Luo Ti tries to stop it from flowing with his hands. Ben Wu doubles over laughing.

You cut the part when he got angry. He fought me.

Julia and Tania Comments:
This was a really hard episode to subtitle. Doing these translations, we just wish we could understand and hear the Mandarin-Chinese language as well as be familiar with Taiwanese slang. It would make translating these Love Cuisine BTSs that we enjoy watching so much easier. We’re very terribly sorry for the missed translations and possibly inaccurate translations for the parts without Chinese subtitles. We hope those who enjoy these are still able to enjoy these translations even with the missing ones and translations we aren’t one hundred percent confident with.
Love Cuisine is the first time we’ve come across the actor, Ben Wu, but from these Love Cuisine BTSs, he’s very interesting to watch. In Episode 4 BTS, we were really surprised with the scene where Ben Wu has durian smacked into his face by Zhang Luo Ti. Hong Yan Xiang said that he saw a 0.1 second of anger from him. It sort of felt like Ben Wu wasn’t happy about it. We were feeling the awkwardness when we were translating the part where Zhang Luo Ti (actor who plays Tang Xiao Niu/Tang Hao in the series) goes to the camera asking the scene to not be edited out.
Our favourite parts in the BTS will have to be the ones with Allison Lin and Lego Li. We love the cute dialogue between them. They are always the best parts of these Love Cuisine BTSs! :oD :oD.
