Love Cuisine, Episode 3: Behind the Scenes

This is the English translations for the Behind the Scenes of Love Cuisine, Episode 3 (料理高校生 – 第3集 BTS). We’d liked to give a head’s up and say that there are some parts of the BTS (behind the scenes) that we did struggle to hear and translate and we’ve made notes stating our inability to translate the part. Our primary language is not Manbdarin-Chinese and we translate by the Chinese subtitles that are supplied in the videos.

HAO MEI LI’S RESTAURANT KITCHEN Huang Jia Qian and Allison Lin

Huang Jia Qian in the midst of cutting the head off of a fish on her chopping board. Allison Lin sits on the opposite side watches her, scared. Huang Jia Qian aggressively brings down the knife on the fish’s head.

Allison Lin cringes away.

Allison Lin laughs to herself at Huang Jia Qian ‘s aggressive treatment towards the fish. She gets off her seat to leave as Huang Jia Qian brings her knife down again, causing Allison Lin to turn back and look at Huang Jia Qian then at the knife across the fish again.

Allison Lin carries on walking away with a scared expression. Camera angle changes to face the crew. Crew is watching Huang Jia Qian bring the knife down again.

Zhu Lu Hao (plays Fang Xiao Rou’s dad) walks into shot from behind the kitchen and around the restaurant area, laughing.

Huang Jia Qian wraps both of her hands around the knife’s handle and brings the knife’s point down onto the fish.

Huang Jia Qian laughs to herself.

Cut to Huang Jia Qian watching over the shoulder of a cook making Three Cup Chicken.

The cook starts laughing suddenly as Huang Jia Qian starts to talk about the fish she was cutting into so aggressively before. She points at the fish that’s on the chopping board off screen.

Cut to Allison Lin watching Huang Jia Qian at the chopping board scaling a fish with full concentration. Allison Lin watches her over the counter on the other side, amazed by her focus.

HAO MEI LI’S RESTAURANT KITCHEN Huang Jia Qian, Allison Lin and Fang Ming Kai

Hao Mei Li jumps in fright, startled by Fang Ming Kai having caught her dish out.

Hao Mei Li curses under her breath, annoyed.

Fang Xiao Rou and Fang Ming Kai stare at her in anticipation to hear her idea as Hao Mei Li struggles to come up with another creative idea.

Huang Jia Qian covers her mouth and laughing in her hands, unable to deliver her lines.

Allison Lin breaks out of character and laughs at Huang Jia Qian’s mistake.

HAO MEI LI’S RESTAURANT KITCHEN Allison Lin and Lego Li

Allison Lin and Lego Li are sitting at a table across from each other. Allison Lin, with a script in her hands, is speaking to the interviewer talking about the childish acts on the set. Lego Li is slouched against his seat listening.

Lego Li gives a languid nod, agreeing with Allison Lin’s statement.

Allison Lin drops her script, palms facing upwards using them to profess the truth.

Lego Li raises both hands and pushes them up in the air.

Allison Lin breaks into laughter, finding Lego Li’s use of stickying her comment to show his level of his support for what she said super funny.

Lego Li breaks into a smile, seeing Allison Lin laugh so hard.

Lego Li leans away from the back of his seat to laugh at himself before leaning back again.

INSIDE HAN JIE’S CAR Allison Lin and Lego Li

Camera on Lego Li who is in the driver’s seat. Shot comes in just as Lego Li finishes talking. He appears to have asked Allison Lin to explain the scene they’re filming whilst she is buckling herself in.

Allison Lin thinks for a moment, eyes on her lap as a hand brushes the back of her head briefly. She then turns to face Lego Li who keeps his gaze towards the front as if visualising the scene.

Lego Li turns to face the interviewer to continue explaining the scene.

Turns to Allison Lin briefly to acknowledge the detail he missed out before turning back to face the front, seemingly catching on about something.

Shot cuts and skip a little in time.

Allison Lin gestures herself with a palm to her chest, laughing.

Allison Lin and Lego Li continue laughing quietly as they stare ahead.

Allison Lin mutters something inaudible to the camera. Lego Li continues telling his story.

The smile on Lego Li from his laugh slowly shorten. He becomes serious, lost in what he’s saying.

Allison Lin turns to Lego Li.

Allison Lin turns away to laugh quietly as Lego Li agrees. He switches topics and speaks to the camera/interviewer.

Allison Lin turns her gaze to Lego Li, watching him gesture the hair at his sides with his hands.

Lego Li, still staring at the camera suddenly calls for Fang Xiao Rou.

Allison Lin covers her mouth, pretending to gag.

Allison Lin reaches for her bag and uses it as a barf bag.

Allison Lin gets back up out of her barf bag, looking at Lego Li as if suddenly remembering the deal. (Allison Lin also appears to be reacting to someone ahead off screen.) She covers her mouth with a hand before giggling into it. Lego Li turns away unimpressed and annoyed.

Lego Li hover his hand over his eyes as if about to pinch the bridge of his nose. Allison Lin is in the background laughing sheepishly.

Lego Li looks out the side of his car window, giving an exasperated sigh before looking straight at the camera to gives us viewers a wink.

INSIDE HAN JIE’S CAR Allison Lin and Lego Li

Allison Lin and Lego Li are practising their lines for the scene after she is taken home by Han Jie from the fishing port where she almost drowned.

Allison Lin turns to Lego Li.

Allison Lin pretends to move towards getting out of the car.

Lego Li, in his driver seat, turns to search the back of the car.

Lego Li presents a toy fur seal to Allison Lin as Han Jie does to Fang Xiao Rou, only that he’s replaced the fish with the toy fur seal. They begin rehearsing the scene again.

Allison Lin takes the fur seal in her hands and begins talking to the seal, practising her lines on it.

Allison Lin turns to face Lego Li.

Lego Li turns around to search the back of the car again to grab something. Allison Lin stops to give the camera a big smile and shows the camera her fur seal while she waits. She turns to see if Lego Li got what he’s looking for. Her smile disappears when he takes a little long to come back with the item. She thins her lips and gives Lego Li a side stare.

Lego Li sits back in his seat and presents Allison Lin a little yellow toy bear.

Lego Li gives the toy to Allison Lin. At the same time, a crew member from outside the car leans through the window, over Lego Li to fiddle with something between them.

Allison Lin breaks into laughter seeing Lego Li being wedged against his seat as the crewmember fixes something in the car. Following Allison Lin, Lego Li lets out a laugh as well. The crew member leaves out the window. Allison Lin recovers and continues her line.

Lego Li reaches behind to the back of the car again. Allison Lin looks at the camera with wide eyes before turning to see what Lego Li is search for this time.

Lego Li returns with a black piece of clothing and gives it to Allison Lin.

MA CHONG SHENG’S GRANDMOTHER’S RESTAURANT Hong Yan Xiang

Filming in the scene in Episode 3. Outside of the restaurant, Ma Chong Sheng, Han Jie, Fang Xiao Rou and two customers surround a small table which sit a couple bowls of noodles. The customers are dissatisfied over the way the noodles Ma Chong Sheng’s cooked for them.

Ma Chong Sheng extends his hand out in front of Customer 1.

Hong Yan Xiang goes out of character, laughing. Customer 1 Actor covers laughs at Hong Yan Xiang’s fierce portrayal of Ma Chong Sheng.

MA CHONG SHENG’S GRANDMOTHER’S RESTAURANT Lego Li, Allison Lin

Lego Li and Allison Lin rehearsing the scene where Han Jie hurries Fang Xiao Rou to the kitchen to treat a burn to her hand. Lego Li holds Allison Lin by the shoulders and is rushing her towards a basin inside the kitchen. He grabs Allison Lin’s wrist with both hands and dunks her hand into the basin.

Allison Lin gives Lego Li a glare for wanting to actually plunge her hand into the basin. He holds her gaze, a very subtle smirk on his face.

Cut to a medium-shot, front-facing angle of Lego Li at the basin with Allison Lin. Lego Li has Allison Lin’s wrist in his hold, waiting to be filmed.

Allison Lin just looks up and down at the camera before directing a glance at Lego Li, who pays no attention to her as he continues fanning her hand like he’s splashing water on it.

Cut to Lego Li and Allison Lin standing in the kitchen. Crew member is checking Lego Li’s outfit. Allison Lin is focused on rubbing her left hand.

Lego Li goes up to Allison Lin to try help get her hand looking scalded. His right hand is raised ready to slap her had. Allison Lin gives her hand to Lego Li to hold.

Lego Li slaps Allison Lin’s hand a few of times quite hard.

Lego Li continues slapping a couple more times quite hard, making Allison Lin squirm away.

Allison Lin pulls her hand away from Lego Li’s grasp, slapping him away.

Lego Li lets her hand go and backs off with a smirk. Allison Lin continues slapping her hand herself. Clapping and slapping.

Lego Li begins slapping his own hand as well.

Cut to Lego Li alone in the kitchen. He is sat down and lifting a gas bottle up and and down.

SI PING CARPARK Lego Li

Lego Li outside, on the ground doing press ups.

SI PING CARPARK Lego Li and Allison Lin

Rehearsing the scene where Han Jie changes his shirt in front of Fang Xiao Rou. Lego Li and Allison Lin are standing out at the carpark next to Han Jie’s car. Allison Lin reaches into her bag to take out the pretend shirt to return to Han Jie/Lego Li.

Fang Xiao Rou turns her eyes away quickly after presenting Han Jie his shirt, pretending he’s removed his shirt.

Han Jie begins unbuttoning his shirt.

Cut to low-angle two-shot of Han Jie whipping his shirt off, whilst Fang Xiao Rou waits for him to take the shirt she’s returning to him, before changing to medium shot of Han Jie shirtless.

Quick cut to two-shot. Fang Xiao Rou gasps seeing Han Jie remove his shirt before quickly turning her eyes away. Quick cut again to medium shot of Han Jie shirtless.

SI PING CARPARK Allison Lin

Allison Lin glances away briefly to think briefly before turning back to talk to the camera.

Allison Lin turns to the side and closes her eyes, waving her own fingers like using magic to make her self believe.

Allison Lin turns back to the camera and opens her eyes again.

UNIVERSIADE COMPETITION VENUE Love Cuisine Cast

Lego Li, Duncan Chow, Su Xuan Xiao and Amy Fan at the kitchen bench. They stand in a line with Su Xuan Xiao and Amy Fang watching Lego Li snap his frying pan and Duncan Chow stirring in his.

Camera cuts to Lego Li knife skills then Duncan Chow’s as well as a close up of Ben Wu’s chopping. Shot widens to show Hong Yan Xiang, Lego Li, Ben Wu Duncan Chow, Su Xuan Xiao and Amy Fan chopping and peeling vegetables. Camera cuts to Lego Li at a side table peeling some kind of ingredient (not sure what it is). Duncan Chow is on Lego Li’s right, head propped up on top of an appliance on the table as he watches Lego Li with a wide grin.

Lego Li is on his last peel. He shows it to Duncan Chow, proud.

Duncan Chow meets Lego Li’s gaze and gives a goofy laugh in response to the outcome Lego Li arrived and so does Lego Li.

Camera cuts to shot of Ben Wu by the kitchen bench with Lego Li at the side, watching Ben Wu gear up to snap a radish in half.

The radish breaks in half.

Ben Wu looks at the two parts of the radish before showing the radish to the camera.

Cut to Lego Li practising peeling a daikon radish into a sheet.

The radish sheet breaks off. He lowers his knife and looks up at the camera before bringing up the piece of radish to look at it, shaking his head.

Lego Li throws the radish piece away.

Cut to Duncan Chow. He’s holding a roll of paper hand towels.

Duncan Chow hides the paper towel roll behind his back.

Duncan Chow brings the paper roll back in front of him in his right hand. His left hand holds his knife. He looks at the roll.

Duncan Chow slips his knife underneath the flap of the paper roll, treating the roll as a daikon radish. He closes his eyes to show the level of his expertise.

Duncan Chow begins spinning the paper roll as his knife glides in between as Ben Wu comes into shot, watching the act. The tissues extend down to like radish sheets.

Duncan Chow opens his eyes and laughs.

Cut to Lego Li talking to the camera about learning knife skills for the drama.

UNIVERSIADE COMPETITION VENUE Love Cuisine Cast

Filming in progress. Nita Lei is filming her lines. Camera moves to focus on Lego Li who is hunched over the judges table in the background, unaware of the camera’s presence.

Lego Li looks up and notices the camera. He eyes does a double take upon spotting the camera and smiles. He looks back down.

Lego Li begins mouthing Nita Lei’s lines as she delivers them.

Cut to Zhang Luo Ti asleep in his seat. Surrounding him are Si Ping Vocational School extras watching and laughing at Male Extra tickling Zhang Luo Ti’s nose.

The extras claps as does Zhang Luo Ti, his eyes still closed.

Male Extra laughs quietly to the camera seeing Zhang Luo Ti clap in his sleep. Zhang Luo Ti opens his eyes moments later. He moves his right hand to cup the side of his head before smiling out of embarrassment.

Zhang Luo Ti points at the camera then covers his eyes with both his hands before peeking through them.

UNIVERSIADE COMPETITON VENUE Love Cuisine Cast, Chris Wu

Wide shot of Universiade room. Allison Lin is the centre of the frame sitting down, head turned towards the camera. Next to her is Su Ying Jun, back facing the camera, and behind her is Calvin Lee. Further in the background is the director speaking to Chris Wu whose back is towards the camera on the right-hand side and Si Ping Vocational School students on the left-hand side.

Hank Wu turns around to talk to the camera.

Allison Lin laughs aloud at herself.

Camera focuses on Duncan Chow, Allison Lin, Nita Lei who’s gazes are directed at the director (off screen) and Lego Li (off screen). Lego Li is being introduced to Chris Wu by the director.

Camera pans across to Lego Li. The top of the director’s head is just in shot. She is speaking to Chris Wu (off-screen)

Camera follows Lego Li as he offers his greetings to Chris Wu who’s off screen.

The director speaks to Lego Li.

The director moves from Lego Li’s side to Chris Wu’s side.

Camera pans from Lego Li to Chris Wu as the director takes her position by Chris Wu. Allison Lin, Nita Lei and Duncan Chow, who are standing around Chris Wu and the director, laughs at the director’s introductions.

The director laughs.

Chris Wu turns and starts walking away from the director, acting angry.

The director tries to pull Chris Wu back.

Chris Wu shakes the director off and walks away.

The director chases after Chris Wu.

Chris Wu clips Hank Wu’s shoulder in his feigned anger.

Chris Wu stops and turns around to come back, laughing. He stands next to Hank Wu and places an arm over his shoulder. (Chris Wu is apologising through the gesture.)

Hank Wu pulls his phone out and prepares to take a selfie of him and Chris Wu. The director comes back to Chris Wu after falling back into the background.

Cut to Lego Li, smiling pleasantly at the camera. Duncan Chow is next to him, his attention away from the camera. Camera pans to Allison Lin as she moves in to speak. Allison Lin gestures the scene off screen with her thumb (presumably referring to Chris Wu).

Allison Lin points to Lego Li who’s off screen

Camera pans to focus on Lego Li.

Lego Li’s remaining hint of a smile falls completely. He glances off to the side briefly before he lowers his head in dejection.

Allison Lin moves place reassuring hands around Lego Li’s shoulders.

Lego Li suddenly perks up, speaking to the camera.

Allison Lin is wide-eyed.

Lego Li turns to Allison Lin as he continues.

Lego Li turns back to face the camera.

Allison Lin turns back to face the camera wearing a bright smile after picking out Chris Wu who’s behind her talking with Nita Lei and Hank Wu.

Allison Lin cups her face in her hands then runs off to head towards Chris Wu. Lego Li looks at the camera, surprised.

Camera follows Allison Lin as Lego Li gestures the direction Allison Lin ran off to.

Camera spins around back to focus on Lego Li who’s leaned over the bench and grinning.

Allison Lin gives Lego Li a few pats on the shoulder.

Allison Lin gestures Lego Li after finishing her statement. Lego Li runs his tongue inside his mouth, in front of his teeth and brushes his thumb across the corner of his lips, lifted by her statement.

Lego Li turns to Allison Lin, eyes downcast and not looking at hers.

Allison Lin is speechless for a moment. Her palm goes up to mouth.

Interviewer corrects Allison Lin.

Allison Lin turns to Lego Li.

Allison Lin turns back to the camera.

Lego Li turns his gaze to right of the camera, focusing on something off screen before returning his attention. Allison Lin points at him then herself, pounding a fist lightly against her chest then points at camera.

OUTSIDE SI PING VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL Calvin Lee, Jarvis, Yi Guang

Calvin Lee, Jarvis, Yi Guang are standing outside the school and are holding a small tray of fruits each.

Calvin Lee turns to speak to Zhang Luo Ti who’s off screen.

Jarvis nods. Zhang Luo Ti, comes into shot with hand against his heart.

Jarvis laughs silently.

Camera cuts, jumping time. Calvin Lee, Jarvis and Zhang Luo Ti in shot, still holding their trays of fruit.

Jarvis and Zhang Luo Ti burst out laughing.

Zhang Luo Ti joins in on the joke.

Zhang Luo Ti laughs.

Julia and Tania Comments:

Duncan Chow is so funny. Coming off from filming Lego Li practising peeling the daikon radish (technique is called Katsuramuki), he goes and peels a paper roll, acting so smart! We can’t help to laugh every time thinking about it! And Huang Jia Qian with her fish, geez, she had us laughing, too! She was really going at the fish’s head. Everyone’s watching her attach that thing not knowing how aggressive she looks.

And Chris Wu! We totally screamed like fan girls seeing him in this! What a great surprise to see him on a Love Cuisine BTS! With Chris Wu on the Love Cuisine set, pretty much half of the main/supporting cast of Rock ‘n’ Road there! Duncan Chow has worked with Chris Wu on What is Love. So of the main cast, only Lego Li hasn’t worked with him. It was really nice to see Lego Li and Chris Wu meet and interact for the first time! We totally love the little act of dejection Lego Li put on when Allison Lin was talking about how he and Duncan Chow were snubbed after Chris Wu arrived on the Love Cuisine set.

Chris Wu’s been surprising us with his sudden appearances lately. First it was with The Crossing Hero web drama (read our The Crossing Hero overviews) which stars Jiro Wang and Nikki Hsieh. We were like, ‘Ahhh! Chris Wu!’ seeing him on the web drama. We had no idea Chris Wu was on it (in the second half Chris Wu takes over from Jiro Wang in a lead-like role, too!). Now, Chris Wu appears here! Love Cuisine Episode 3 BTS was double the goodness! :o) :o).
