This is the English translations for the Behind the Scenes of Love Cuisine, Episode 2 (料理高校生 – 第2集 BTS). We’d liked to give a head’s up and say that there are some parts of the BTS (behind the scenes) that we did struggle to hear and translate and we’ve made notes stating our inability to translate the part. Our primary language is not Mandarin-Chinese and we translate by the Chinese subtitles that are supplied in the videos.

It’s got a greasy feel—that’s right. For the sake of health, people can’t have food that is too greasy.

ALLISON LIN
You can’t eat food that’s too greasy. Today, I’ve broken the rule and had something a bit more greasy.
INTERVIEWER
When Lego towed you and then let go, what were your thoughts?

There seems to be a bit of fear on her.
ALLISON LIN
Because… actually… When he had to grab me, I had to act unconscious so I had to shut my eyes. When I shut my eyes, I can’t swim. With my eyes shut, he took me to some other place. I didn’t know where he had to take me. I also didn’t know what was going on around me, so I was actually a little scared. When they called ‘cut’, that is… when I was let go of, that’s when I extended my feet. At that point, I discovered I couldn’t tread, for a split second, I was a little scared.

No. It’s because ‘cut’ was called and because Allison wasn’t able to swim at all. So, when they called cut, I used all my strength to direct her towards the direction of the lifesaving coach. I used my last ounce of strength to push her towards that side so I could start saving myself…
Cut shot to showing the scene where Lego Li as Han Jie is towing the unconscious Allison Lin as Fang Xiao Rou. Lego Li’s head goes underwater as Allison Lin opens back her eyes and begins swimming and staying afloat with the help of Lego Li pushing her towards the lifesaving instructor with floating devices. As Lego Li explains, he is drinking water as he leads Allison Lin towards the lifesaving instructors.
LEGO LI (CONT’D)
…because I was already out of strength. Like the first two shots, I wanted to continue to save Allison, but in order to save her, I was underneath taking in water the whole time. I was taking in water the whole time.
Footage returns back to Lego Li talking to the camera.
LEGO LI (CONT’D)
I originally thought I’d feel quite relaxed. Then after getting back up here, I feel so tired. Come to think of it, the last time I felt more or less relaxed was… seven years ago. I think I’m getting old. It feels like I’m old. Time seems to have affected my strength.
(NB: Lego Li’s literal speech include an idiom: “My physical strength seems to have a bit of— time is unforgiving to people / time and tide waits for no man“).

Voice distressingly repeats over and over that Allison Lin isn’t able to tread. A lifesaving instructor is closing in onto Allison Lin’s position and a floating device is pushed in front of her. Allison Lin doesn’t notice it as she gets hair out of her eyes. Lego Li moves in towards Allison Lin and appears to provide her a helping hand to have her finally notice the floating device in front of her. Allison Lin grabs hold of it and rests on it.

(laughs at himself)
My brain was really lacking oxygen back there. I’m so tired…
Camera pans to Allison Lin who also has a towel over her head, sitting on a chair facing away from us. She speaks from behind the backrest of her chair.
ALLISON LIN
That’s right. I was very scared. Lego even swam till such a point. Back there, my mind went blank.
LEGO LI
(to Allison Lin)
I mean it. I was worried about you.
Lego Li raises his right hand, swearing in oath.
LEGO LI (CONT’D)
(to Allison Lin)
I mean it. I mean it.
ALLISON LIN off-screen
I know.
LEGO LI
Yeah… I… I—
Lego Li stops mid-sentence as he let’s Allison Lin speak.
ALLISON LIN
I do.
Lego Li gives a nod to Allison Lin’s words then resumes from where he left off.
LEGO LI
I supported you above me. Whilst I was under, I drank two, even three mouthfuls of ocean water. After that, I choked; and that’s when I quickly pushed you aside, towards the coach like this.
ALLISON LIN
(laughing really hard)
I had a feeling Lego Li had pushed me off far away, but he pushed me to a place where I wasn’t able to tread.
Allison Lin bends over the arm rest of her chair in silent laughter before she comes back to the camera.
ALLISON LIN (CONT’D)
Yes…
Lego Li is looking slightly embarrassed as he tries to, again, explain his actions. He demonstrates with his hands.
LEGO LI
I had pushed you towards where I had viewed as the safest place. Pushing you right over before I quickly surfaced.
ALLISON LIN
My eyes were closed at the time when I was pushed. So, after I was pushed I opened my eyes. I felt myself flying.

A delayed reaction to Lego Li’s kamehameha wave, Allison Lin leans back a little and holds a hand to her chest, having been hit by it.

He picks the fish paste back up again and whacks it back down and sends Allison Lin another look. The throw is slightly softer this time. And so is the look he directs Allison Lin.

Why are you looking at me like that whilst playing with it?
Lego Li breaks out into quiet laughter to Allison Lin’s comment as he continues to roll and knead the fish paste in the bowl below him.
ALLISON LIN
This makes me a little afraid.
Allison Lin keeps looking at Lego Li who still has his attention on the fish paste he’s rolling and kneading in the bowl below him. Lego Li chuckles. Allison Lin breaks out into a chuckle watching him chuckle.
The shot cuts and we jump in time.
LEGO LI
When we change locations later, people will definitely ask me, “Did you come back from the fish market?” The whole day, I’ve been playing with fish.
Allison Lin turns to the camera and begins elaborating on Lego Li’s words.
ALLISON LIN

Preparing for the scene that sees Fang Xiao Rou go into a dream sequence of Han Jie as a master chef on stage. Lego Li and Allison Lin are standing by a chopping board with fish paste on it. Lego Li is chopping lightly at the fish paste.
DIRECTOR off-screen
Lego: look at Allison looking at it a little longer.
Lego Li stops chopping after the director’s instructions and moves away from the chopping board. Allison Lin takes hold of the meat cleaver, waiting for instructions. Lego Li makes a comment to the director’s instructions.
LEGO LI
There will be feelings like this!
Allison Lin continues to be concentrated on her job. Meanwhile, Lego Li continues to loiter around the area, standing some distance away from where Allison Lin is. He goes to make another comment on the director’s instructions.

(NB: not sure if there is another meaning to the text. This seems a little bit of an odd speech… Is Lego Li taking on a bit of Han Jie’s personality?)
Lego Li’s comment takes a while to get to Allison Lin, but it does. Allison Lin laughs awkwardly to Lego Li’s odd question before she laughs speechless.

Was that scene where Allison Lin and Lego Li had to film the rescue of Fang Xiao Rou scene not interesting?! Before Lego Li explained what was happening whilst he was filming that scene, it really did look like he had pushed Allison Lin off and not cared that she was having trouble in the water. But no, he was actually choking on water and tried to get her towards safety as quickly as he could before both got themselves into trouble. Poor Lego Li! Allison Lin was really cool. She found the whole thing hilarious after getting back on shore, despite feeling quite afraid at the time. She wasn’t just laughing lightly, she was seriously laughing quite hard about it!! We really love this particular part of the BTS. The Kamehameha Wave scene at the end was cute, too!
