This is the English translations for the Behind the Scenes of Love Cuisine, Episode 1 (料理高校生 – 第1集 BTS). We’d liked to give a head’s up and say that there are some parts of the BTS (behind the scenes) that we did struggle to hear and translate and we’ve made notes stating our inability to translate the part. Our primary language is not Mandarin-Chinese and we translate by the Chinese subtitles that are supplied in the videos.

Long Ge, the fisherman that appears on the opening scene of Episode 1, is sitting on the seaside rocks talking to the camera.

In the drama, I am a person who frequently goes fishing. I am an affluent 2nd generation.
Long Ge points behind him in the direction of the sea.

The camera goes away from Allison Lin talking to us and towards the direction Lego Li has walked off to. Lego Li is already some metres away. He talks to us as he walks.
LEGO LI
It’s because we played that game too fast. I didn’t want it to be like this.

Lego Li resumes walking off as Allison Lin talks to the camera by herself.

And he’s really strange. He appears like a really intelligent person. There are times when he’ll suddenly have an intriguing recurrence of stupidity.

The director speedily runs down the rocks and onto flat and levelled ground.

Allison points on the left side of the camera to someone behind it. She moves her indication to the right.

Camera swivels around to Lego Li with sunglasses on.

LEGO LI
That’s right.
Camera follows Lego Li head to Allison Lin’s side.
LEGO LI (CONT’D)

Lego Li situates himself next to Allison Lin, hovering beside her.
LEGO LI

Lego Li laughs in embarrassment as he puts his head in his palm in shame for forgetting his own character’s name.

Allison Lin takes over in describing their character’s relationship. As Allison speaks, Lego Li is using his hands to demonstrate the things Allison Lin is talking about, something that looks like he’s casting his fishing line and then a pen-scribbling action with his right hand.
ALLISON LIN
I saw him as a scoundrel and then ___ graceful. And then there was some person up to something.
(Note: Allison Lin was speaking very fast. There were no Chinese subtitles except for two on-screen texts that didn’t help us with translating this line accurately.)

Filming the opening credits: Wang Mai Zhi (Ben Wu) is hiding behind a library shelf waiting for Liu Xuan (Su Xiao Xuan) to come to his row. When Liu Xuan does, he pushes a book with a heart-shaped note in it towards her; however, Ma Chong Sheng (Hong Yan Xiang) ruins his careful planning as Ma Chong Sheng picks the book up before Liu Xuan does and takes her away somewhere.

Wang Mai Zhi slaps his knee in disappointment in light of his plans being ruined.

Hong Yan Xiang interrupts and explains himself. As he begins to do so, Su Xiao Xuan is hiding herself behind a book she has in her hands.

It wasn’t like that. During the part “I’m taking you somewhere”, I hadn’t extended my hand. She already had her hand out.

(to Su Xiao Xuan)
You’re really enthusiastic! You shouldn’t be like this! You have to wait for him to drag you!

There’s really is a crying sound!
Ben Wu was in the midst of leaving, but comes upon hearing his Jarvis mention about the shell pasta having a crying sound. He goes to Winnie Wu with a shell pasta by her ear.

Ben Wu takes the hand of Winnie Wu with the shell pasta and puts it by his ear. He drags her along with him as he listens and sings.

SCHOOL KITCHEN Jarvis, Ben Wu, Su Xiao Xuan and Winnie Wu.
Jarvis is next to his co-stars in the cooking uniform we see in the opening credits. Whilst his other three co-stars are being instructed, he’s playing for the camera with a flipper utensil in his hands doing chops and slices with it.

Kong Meng Zhe puts a hand on Wang Mai Zhi’s shoulder to stop him from continuing with his back talk. Meanwhile, Fang Xiao Rou takes Han Jie by the arm and pulls him away from the group.
FANG XIAO ROU
Teacher Han.
Han Jie keeps his eyes on Wang Mai Zhi as he extends a hand with his stopwatch, telling him that he is about to start the stopwatch.
ON-SCREEN TEXT
Acting. Acting. Acting.
Allison Lin suddenly looks worried as her eyes look down upon the knife and potato in Lego Li’s hands that is slowly looking dangerously close to cutting his hand.

Julia and Tania Comments:
This BTS was rather uneventful. Are the BTSs for the first episode like this where there’s not a lot of dialogue happening from the actors/actresses? We don’t watch BTSs—this is the first one we’ve watched—and it was quite subdued. We were expecting a bit more candid talking from this BTS. But it almost felt (a lot) scripted. Saying that though, we did enjoy the part where Lego Li and Allison Lin were playing the noughts and crosses game. It was so cute when Lego Li calls Allison Lin over with ‘Sweetheart’. Cute! Another cool part is when Lego Li was concerned when Allison Lin looked lethargic when she was talking about having finished filming for the day.
